I Need more trunk space!

So my wife, in her infinite wisdom, bought an 07 Civic EX. Then she proceeded to take all of her stuff out of the back of our 03 Yukon XL Denali. If you know the Yukon XL, you know it can hold a ton of crap. So, my issue is, now that she has the baby's over-sized stroller, 2 child suitcases (with changes of clothes for all 3 children, including shoes), plus a ton of other miscellaneous crap in the trunk, I have very little room for things I need to put in the back. So, my question is, how do I (or can I) garner more trunk space? I read the thread about putting the spare under the car, but that may not be an option. My butt scrapes the ground while driving the thing as it is... (yes, i exaggerate) Is there any way I can utilize the space under the passenger seats? Or is something down there? I can't really move her stuff out because I'd have to do it daily as I take the car to work, and she drives it around when I get home (2PM). So, what can I do (besides sell the car and get another Yukon)?

Thanks in advance

Re: I Need more trunk space!

you might remove the back seat (the folding part) instead of just folding it down... that might give you a small amout of extra space

Re: I Need more trunk space!

I think that removing or folding the back seat would likely defeat the purpose of carrying most of this stuff anyway, as one would have nowhere to put the children that go with the two suitcases taking up space in the trunk. Other than removing the spare, which I personally wouldn't do, you're not going to make the trunk much bigger. You might try reminding the wife that carrying all that extra weight doesn't help the civic's fuel efficiency. I'm sure it's still much better than the yukon, but was gas mileage a factor in choosing the civic?? You could also just remind her that this is a smaller vehicle, and you do need a place to carry stuff, and ask if she could carry less, or try to compress what she does have in there.

Re: I Need more trunk space!

Or, and please don't take this idea too seriously, you could figure that if the wife can decide on her own to buy a civic, maybe you too can independently decide to buy your own. Just a thought.

ummmmm... Is any one else missing the clear solution? Put her back into the yukon.... You dont get a civic to haul around a yukon's worth of crap.

Re: I Need more trunk space!

Nah, get back on topic guys.

Suitcases take up a lot of space. Maybe use thoes bags that have the air sucked out of them and take up like 1/4 the space of a regualr bag of junk- you know what i'm talking about?

Also, replace your stock jack with a bottle jack, that give you a tad more room- allowed me to stuff my road safety kit in there with the spare under the board.- also dunno what way the sock tire is mounted, but if you flip it so the rim face side is down, you can throw some extra crap in the hole, thats where I put some towles in a bag, quick detailer, and some other random ****.

I remember back in the day derek- the old owner of the site, he took his car to a shop and had them hammer the trunk down, extend it, whatever you call it- so he could fit some stereo equip under there, with a fully useable trunk space.

Lots of ideas. There are also a few inches to be gained when taking out the stock lining.

Your idea of under the seats- thats where your fuel tank is- 13 gallons of fuel (is it 13 gallons or more?) has to go somewhere. You could probably have a shop hammer it donw, and only gain a few inches- not worth it. I've also seen people hallow out the seat cushions to store "valuables" in a discreet way.

Re: I Need more trunk space!

Ooh, we have those vacuum bags. That'll sure as hell help... Thanks for the ideas all. My wife bought a Civic because I "always wanted one". Well, that was about 10 years ago that I last "always wanted one". She's crazy, I tell you.

Re: I Need more trunk space!

Trade it for an Accord sedan. If that is not enough then,
Civic < Accord
Accord < CRV
CRV < Element
Element < Pilot
Pilot < Odyssey.
If the Odyssey is still not big enough get the Ridgeline and throw the crap in the back, there is a "trunk" under the bed of the truck.
If the Ridgeline still is not big enough do as Murdock said and "Get a bus!"
If a damn bus aint big enough then load the **** along with the wife on the the space shuttle and blast her and the **** in to space. I think the shuttle and the Yukon get about the same MPG. Don't they?

Re: I Need more trunk space!

you should get harry potter to hook you up with one of them "bigger on the inside" trunks. seriosly though, the only place other than to put stuff than the trunk is in the glove box, and in the 04 coupe at least, when you fold down the back seats, there are two little "doors" on either side; each one of those has about 1/2-3/4 cu ft of space. most people don't know it, but you could put your weed in there.

Re: I Need more trunk space!

I like the bit about the space shuttle. It's tempting. And they do get the same mileage.

Here's another question then... The area where the speakers are (inside the trunk) looks pretty wide open. My main thing is, I need to be able to put about 6 reems of paper in the trunk (just for a visual aid, i don't need the paper) without it getting lost. So, is there anything out there that I can buy that'll allow me to have a 'shelf' hooked up there? If not, how would I go about making one? I know how to measure, use a screwdriver, and cry when I hit my thumb with a hammer, so I'm not a complete idiot. I just need to know where to start, and what I should watch out for. Oh, and where can I get some more of that felt-ish material they use for the interior? I wanna make it look 1/2 way classy...

Here's pics of the area:

Re: I Need more trunk space!

trade in the yukon, since it sounds like you aren't going to be driving it as much, and get another car! (or an odyssey since you have three kids)

the odyssey should be able to handle all that stuff no sweat.

Re: I Need more trunk space!

I would put a piece of wood across the backseats (screwing to the metal part) I would then cut a piece of cardboard to shape the shelf perfect, i'd make the sheld out of 3/4 plywood g1s and put the good side down. i'd then get two pieces of ready rod (threaded rod) about 6" long and put them in the holes on the front top of the trunk beside the square holes on either side (if that made any sense) i'd then drill holes in the shelf board at the spot where the rod would go through and then i'd screw the shelf board to the board at the back, and thread nuts on the ready rod to hold the shelf. boom, insta shelf. if you wanted to make it look good, you could go to wal-mart and pick up a couple meters of felt and a can of craft spray glue, i'd spray glue on the board then stretch the fabric over it and staple it on the back and sides.

i'll scetch a pic later, i'm in a rush right now, i'm sposed to be @ work
