Going from 1st to 3rd gear...bad?
So I'm riding with this guy and he started off in first and hit about 20 something mph and then shifted to third. I was just wondering if this was bad for the transmition or any other part of the car.
Also, my civic has 2500 miles on it. Do I get my first oil change at 3000, or more?

YES it is bad, unless he has money coming out the a$$ and can afford to replace his clutch and eventually his whole tranny will need some serious repair. you should always change your oil every 3,000. you can leave the oil there for a while, but eventually in that environment the oil will get burned and this leaves residue all throughout the internals and can eventually lead to the loss of engine life
take it easy bro

2500 miles total? if so then no, the dealer told me not to get it changed until 6k-7k because they put something in the oil from the factory and it helps break in the engine and taking it out early could lead to problems, also the book tells you not to do it until later too.

Damn, maybe I should tell him that. I asked him about it but he said thats like the 3rd or 4th time he's done it. Is it bad even then or if he does it continuously over and over? Just wondering so I know I should never try it.
Wait just a second Jon...My dealer told me to wait till 10,000 for the first change, then every 3,000 after that. I even asked another honda dealer cause I thought mine was full of shiet. SVongkasem- I think you should check with your dealer on that.
Whoa!..I do shift to from 1st to third if I have my R.p.m.'s up and see a cop. I thought that it would just not let you go faster. But now that I think about it, Having your r.p.m.'s high, then low all of a sudden, doesn't sound like a good idea either. Could someone go more into detail about what happens with the shifting and skipping gears? I'd really like to know more about that.

<< how do u shift from 1 to 3? >>
yea, they are like your description, but people don't shift like that for speed, or to shift quicker. I did it to lower my r.p.m.'s. But I have a friend who does it constently because he said it saves gas. I'm not too sure on what it does tho.

Yeah honestly I tried it once today and for some reason my third gear feels like it lags now. But maybe its all in my head. It was like my first time doing it cuz I just tried it...? But like I said it may all be up in my head, but it does feel slower in 3rd gear and idle sounded funky...Can any experts expand for me and SilverCivic2k1 please? Thanx a lot...

Geessss...skipping a gear isn't going to hurt anything. What about when you are riding along in 5th and decide to drop it to 3rd to pass someone or something. It saves a shift when you get lazy. I go from 3rd to 5th sometimes. I don't know how you could think it would hurt anything..

for the life of the 1987 acura integra that i had driven.. it had almost ALWAYS been driven using a 1st to 3rd method. it does not ruin anything.. if anything, you're actually gonna prolong the life of second gear.. haha
chill guys.. it's not a big deal at all.
it's going from low revs, say 4000rpm in 5th gear, to over redline in 1st gear that is gonna hurt you.. those kind of things are what can create problems.

Alright guys, I've heard the goods and the bads. Most of which are good, so I'll take it that going from 1st to 3rd was ok. But I'm just never gonna do it again so I wont scare myself anymore.... Thanx to all...
Skipping gears does not hurt if done carefully and with out over revving the engine. Its true that this saves gas because some cars have this feature built in to them. The Chevy Camaro shifts from 1st to 4th to help save gas, but this only happens when you hit a certain speed and rpm for a certain amount of time, usually in traffic.
I used to have a Mustang that had a lot of torque and i would shift from 2 to 4 pretty much all the time, no worries you won't hurt anything as long as your not pushing your motor because your rpm's are to low.

In regards to the oil change...I heard from a few sources that if you have a brand new car, you should change the oil at around 500-1000 miles then every 3000 miles after. Something about the oil from the factory may contain tiny metal shavings and/or when the new parts rub together during the 'breaking in period', metal shavings/chips end up in the oil which can cause scratches in the engine.
