An EGR valve stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation and it sends some of the exhaust gas back into the cylinders to reduce combustion tempertures. Lowering the combustion temperture reduces the amount of nitrous oxides that are sent out through your tailpipe.

Mine got clogged on my '93 accord and they had to drill them out. Cost me a 100 bucks at the dealer. One of 2 repairs in 5 years and 150k.

For the people who have them the EGR valve is usually located on the intake manifold. You shouldn't have to worry about replacing it for awhile. If your curious though just pull it out (never came across one that was threaded) and shake. If you here a rattle it's all good.
