How do i get the stupid shift knob off??

How do i get the stupid shift **** off??

If i try and twist it off, the stupid boot wants to turn with the ****. Is there some trick? This is for a m/t.

push the boot down (by the plastic at the top) till it unsnaps from the shift ****, then twist.
