new bolts anytime you swap the head. oem is fine for na, but dont have the head milled or the gasket will blow. oh yea you also need all new gaskets when swapping the head.

Milling should not blow a gasket but you should be careful. Old skool datsun heads only have a .008 of max shaving. But yes every time you pull the head you should use new bolts. They stretch and get brittle and old bolts may not give you a proper tq reading when trying to retighten them.

from personal experience I swapped my head with a new gasket and used head bolts on a milled head. No problems here.. I also spray nitrous on this engine.

Its not that you can not use them its just not wise to. It also depends on how long they where on for. For instance when building my 4cyl race motor i opted for new bolts cause the old ones had over 200k miles on them. And its just insurance for what could happen. Would it be crappy if you blew a motor/ gasket just by a simple bolt. I say if you are spending money on the top end do it right.....why do the same thing twice and risk some thing of way more value. Kinda like me the jackass who decided to run a stock oil pump on an engine that had drilled rod oil passageways. Now I have to pull it all apart and replace the spun bearing. Simple fix of oil pump= 80 bucks......now I have to shell out $$$$$ to fix it.

my milled head lasted 1.5 years before the gasket gave up. imo i wouldn't mill down past spec which i think is .2mm to be safe.

i completely agree. just sharing my experience. but on a low milage d17 and non boosted application i would just reuse the old ones.
