does oil really matter?

hey y'all - havent been on the site in a while. anyways got a question for all the engine experts out there.

The car manual says to use 5w-20 oil. But some of my friends seem to say it doesnt really matter ~that much~ if you dont use 5w-20. They claim almost any car will run just fine on 10w-30. Now I know that there are viscosity differences in the oils, and different cars must ask for different oils for some good reason.

But is it just a recommendation? (like if you use 5w-20 its optimal, but using other oils wont damage your car)

or is it a requirement? (like if you dont use 5w-20 you WILL damage your car)

any knowledge?

Yeah it does matter, it helps the engine run smoother.
But seriously, I am not sure about this, but I am interested to find out though.

Oil matters like a Motha Fugger.....when I went to get my oil changed, they were out of the Quaker State Synthetic I wanted in a 5W-20....
so I just went with a 10W-30 and my car runs great. They are just slightly different, but if you were to put two cars side by side, one with 5w and the other with 10w, you could never tell them difference, and the 10w is fine for your car.

Uncle B - sorry if Im annoying you with questions, but I DID do a search and it did not yield anything. Like I said once before a long while ago ... the search dont work so well. I think it only looks at the titles or something. I don't know. I DO search tho, so don't bite me there.

lol i think thats how my girlfriend killed the engine in her 89 dodge shadow, she forgot to put oil in

from what ive heard, 10w-30 is actually better for the car than 5w-20. they only say to use it because it gives slightly better gas mileage (but the amount is so small that you wouldnt notice it.. like .04 mpg or something like that
