intake exhaust general q
intake exhaust general q
hey Im new here, I don't know much about cars, but am hoping to learn, so please bear with me my question is, to my understanding ( while looking at the engine) the intake on the civic is facing the rear while the exhaust is facing the front of the car, this doesn't make much sense to me, wouldn't that restrict a lot of air flow? can someone please explain this, thanks in advance.

see that lined black box right above the motor? thats the airbox. there is an filter under that airbox to protect your engine from sucking in natsy particles and objects.
on the left to that is called an resonator
than whats attached to the air resonator is a tube thats behind the battery. thats where air is sucked in when you open the throttle (gas it).
as for the exhaust, you see where that heatshield is? under there is an header (also known as an exhaust manifold i believe). if you follow those pipes, it will lead under to the car where you will see a catylic converter (which is for smog emissions), than onto the exhaust system.
right i got that part, but my question is why is the exhaust facing the front of the car when it needs to be emmitted from the back of the car, and why is the intake facing the back if it needs to be drawn from the front? wouldn;t it make more sense if the intake was facing the front and the exhaust was facing the back? so the air flow would be fluent instead of having to make all those turns

that's something you would need to ask honda. they designed the car lol.
take a look at the k series engine. there set up with the intake main in the front and the exgaust mani in the rear. but when you put a intake on it still goes to the back.
there is really much of a diffrence that you would feel if it was set up in reverse.

yeah realistically its not a big deal as long as the stuff ends up in the same place. Obviously you dont want to suck in hot air, which you really dont in this case. everything works together just fine with these configurations. Honda has been building them that way for a long time and they are one of the most efficient engine builders in the world. If it was a bad thing they would have never made them that way. No worries dude. Remember, your driving a Honda, second guess the aftermarket parts not the factory ones. Do that and you'll be ok.
i see what you mean now. idk neither. but i do know the hotter the gases are in the exhaust system, the better "performance" flow.
therefore, the d17 has an longer exhaust system than the K-series but still doesnt have the potenial of one
