Air condition making my car act funny?

ive had this problem for a bit, but noone seemed to know on the other forums i go to, so im going to give it a shot here...

My 2001 civic lx auto, we all know A/C robs Hp out of a car when its on,,, but recently when i have my a/c on, it drops my idle to almost the last line on the tach.

plus! occasionally, after dead stops or freeway driving. the car seems to not want to pull anymore, pedal has to be past 1/2 way for it to move normally which i find is not normal... all this seemed to happen after my ac kept going off and on off and on every few seconds a few months back, but honda drained some freon out and said it was good to go... ever since then the ac didnt cut on and off but is robbing the hp like no tomorrow... and when i accelerate, there is a weird whirling sound coming from the engine bay area only when the a/c is on (not occasionally)

(oil change/spark plug/sea foamed crankcase) was previously done to see if the problem would go away, nothing so far... any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I've got the whirling high pitched noise too with the AC on. Sounds like a turbo spinning up. LOL.

Its normal. Our cars barely have any power to begin with. So when you turn the AC on and plus the fact that the weather is really hot you lose lot of power.

It should compensate when the A/C is on, and bump the idle back up. I would look at all your fuses first, to make sure you don't have a blown relay. Other than that, I'm

checked all the fuses under the hood, everything looks perfectly normal... seems something only occurs when the A/C is on?? think the a/c clutch might be giving up?? or a would it be best to check on a relay first? i dont wanna blow a few hundred for something that cost under 40$ for a relay,

weird, idle should increase not decrease, so it sounds like it is not compensating for extra work. Not sure what that is in auto lang.

have you done the throttle body coolant bypass? if so, put it back.

My car does the same thing, ever since Ive been boosted. we did the bypass at the same time, and many people who have done this mod, have idle probs. So if so, change it back, and it should be fine.

Should be my prob, since the stock injectors and everything is still the same.

the car is all stock, ive changed the air filter and resetted the ecu, the ac idle prob kinda went away, but loss of power is still there... im gonna change to a 5w30 instead of a 5w20 and see if that helps a bit since the nyc weathers been in the upper 90's all around now, and do a tranny fluid change along the way as well...

and for a boosted civic with stock injectors, youre missing out on half the power that turbo can bring out of the civic... dsm injectors works well with my old 5thgen accord, not sure if its a direct fit for 01 civics...

thanks for all the help!

I also have the same problem and it seems to be a power issue. I haven't had the time to fix it but I think it may be the battery. Have you changed it out since buying it in 2001? I have a voltometer hooked up and when i turn on the a/c it drops to 12 rather than 14 when the car is on. I am going to try hooking up a battery charge to it or jumpers and see if that fixes the problem or possibly better grounds.

i was talking about performance loss (torque, car having major trouble accelerating) its to the point where im scared to cut into lanes even if a cars moving under 45mph cause the car just freezes if i try to accelerate for a good 8-10 seconds there, even on a rolling start

that all sounds bad, man, the ac should not make your car that slow. Unless your boosted running ac is not a problem at all. Your engine should bogg down for a split second when you turn the ac on and then run at a slightly higher rpm.
Take it to dealer, or a trusted mechanic, cause you cannot always trust dealers, they are snakes in the grass.

ur AC needs to be recharged w/more oil. Thats y u hear it whining, and thats why you are lost power. The compressor is over working it self and has a lack of lube.

http://www.duracool.com/Duracool/acsolutions.html

read up, and maybe get ur self the
Duracool® Mobile A/C Tune Up and Sealant Kit
also check how tight ur AC compressor belt is, it should have an inch slack.

ill give that a try, do you know how to decharge the a/c system for the 01 civics? i dont want to over fill and cause the system to go nuts like it did last time, so im going to decharge the whole thing and refill it...

or do they sell a meter or something that tells if its full or not?

go drive another comparable civic with A/C on and off and see how it compares to yours.
it could just be cuz ur not use to having this little power. even my oldass 95 neon (throwing like 4 engine codes) seems to have way more low end power than the civic

the ac system is terrible and does all sorts of things from robbing hp to making noise to making engine growl. Its retarded and I try my best not to use it unless its super hot or foggy out.

My wifes 98 civic had this same problem.

One day she was driving, when all of a sudden she heard a big bang. TONS of white steam came out of her engine bay. She called me, and i was instantly on my way.

When i got there, i found that her AC compressor had siezed, and blew itself in half.

Apparently it somehow leaked out all of the oil, got hot, and siezed.

thread from the dead here, but my girls 2001 EX just started doing this (why I registered). It sounds like water drops in a bucket or something, its the weirdest noise I've ever heard a car make. Also the idle drops really low when the compressor kicks on, like it wants to die. Did you ever figure out what this was?
