the 2 sides are very easy to pull out just have to losen there are clips on them...but instead of painting them why not just use vinal....www,rvinyl.com sells pre cut vinal for out cars....ill show u pics of mine looks painted....u still have to pull out when installing though..for the best quality...im me sometime and ill show u how mine looks
^what he said for the sides, mine are painted but i didnt paint the centerconsole just the side vents, the center vent area, and gage bezal. it looks good and its easy but if u dont know how to paint ur going to have to redo it a bunch of times.
just pull off vents or objects ur going to paint
sand them lightly until its as smooth as u want it with 500-2000 sand paper (theres different levels)
use sandable primer
sand lightly
repeat
spary really lightly of color paint
do several really light coats
if u try to do it in one or two you will have runs
then do clear coat
process should take 2-4 hours depending how long it take to dry and how good you are

you can just pull out the dash vents. Or just get a rag and gently lift up the vent with a flat head screw driver. Becareful not to dmg the vinyl.
Don't get the vinly sticker for the vents. They look ok from a distance but they look cheap up close. Be sure to clean the vents with alcohol to get rid of the dirt before you paint it or the paint is going to flake off later. I learned this the hard way.
