third brake light flash issue

Looking for some info or advice here. Whenever i depress the brak epedal, my third brake light, the one in the rear window, flashes like 12 or 13 times b4 it stays constant. Is this normal, i haven't really noticed any other cars let alone EM2 civics doing this. I think it might be a safety feature however I find it slightly annoying and was wondering if their was any way of fixing it short of unplugging the deck light and/or removing the buld in effect diabling the whole thing. I simply want it to light up when i press the brake and stay lit. thanks!

What year is your car? If you got an '05, they might have added the 3rd brake light flash as a safety measure.

Your profile says you have an '01?

Have you changed any other bulbs recently? Sometimes if you change a light bulb with one other than what is specified by the manufacturer, weird things happen. i.e. your third brake light flashes when you stop.

my car is an 01, i think i changed a head light bulb right after i got it a year ago but i can't remember if it flashed b4 that or not, if thats the case is there a way to reset the system, i have unplugged the battery several times to do other work on the car so i know that won't fix it, otherwise i was thinking about getting the o.e.m spoiler and just wiring up the third brake light to the spoiler,, howwever if their is some electrical connector or modulator causing it to flash then that won't probably solve the problem

i've seen this on one other car, but i don't recall make/model. all i know is it was domestic, and the brake would flash about 3 times, and then stay constant. i dunno about 12-13 times! wow!

Could it possibly be the bulb itself?

thats an good idea, i'll try pulling the bulb and swapping it with a new one, i bet their only a couple bucks at auto zone and it could be an easy fix, although i thought i read somewhere that you have to remove the whole rear deck just to get access to that light!!

no you don't. You just pop open the trunk, and twist and twish back in. Takes you 3seconds.

Strange for the year. Honda does offer a thing they call "red alert" - little capacitor inline with the light, but it doesn't blink 13 times.

hey thanks for the tip on the red alert bires, i did what i should have done in the first place and checked it out, but i found a little black chip about the siza of a quarter but square with the words "red alert", and it has three wires going into it and two going out to the decklight, so i figure mine is just whack and blinks 13 times instead of the normal two to three, maybe it got wet or something, n e ways thanks for all the advice peeps!
