that is correct. fuel gauge accuracy sucks. For instance, sometimes my low fuel light comes on when I have almost 3 gallons left, other times it has come on when I've had about a gallon and a half left. Your "1/8" tank might be off a gallon from someone elses "1/8" tank. A single gallon in our cars is 30-40 miles so it can throw your number off significantly. When comparing numbers like this you need to use a unit system that is standard across all cars being compared. Saying you fill up a "full tank" is a subjective measurement made by each individual.

good call right there. i hate it when my friends with different cars try to tell me what they get to a "half tank"

I also have an 05 ex automatic, and i only get 28 mpg split between highway and city. The one time i really focused on driving extremely cautious for the purpose of monitoring my mpg's, i got 31 mpg. (sucks) I only have 3500 miles on my car. Hopefully as my miles increase so will my mpg. As of right now i am not impressed at all with the mpg's of my car. Is the thoery behind all of this that the engine needs to break in before the mpg's increase to normal numbers. What would be the average break in number.

My 05 EX 5spd's gas mileage was kinda shitty when I got it too .. for the first 5,000-6,000 miles or so I never got better than 32MPG, mostly 70-75mph highway use ... but the past couple fill-ups I have been getting about 35MPG. I also noticed a slight increase when I don't downshifting coming to stops, and when I rev out the engine and shift @ 3500-4000 RPM. I get the shittiest gas mileage shifting at 2500 RPM or around there for some reason.

Stick in there though, it'll get better.

not really.

it shouldnt vary per tank as longa s you fillyour tank...

run how ever long you want... see how far you went then fill up and read how much you put in..

put in is used fuel... and you ahve the mileage...

I've got an '02 HX which got over 40 very consistantly and oddly enough even got a bit better after I/H/E. Tho I found that AC killed my milage by about 5 mpg on the highway and that I needed to keep it below about 3500rpm otherwise it would start to eat a bit more fuel. Then again it was always a pain to try and pass someone from <3500 in 5th gear I did alot of road trips and got very bored.

Other fun MPG tips: keep the windows up on the highway, they destroy your Cd down. Stay off the vtec, duh. Make sure your alignment is good, race alignment + sticky tires = shitty mpg. Undertrays are god for MPG but ditch that spoiler and funky bodykit. If you've got cruise control, don't use it, you can be more efficient with your right foot, plus it's a good habit for racers to keep their momentum up.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that is correct. Using cruise control on the highway always seems to give me better milage. Keeps the engine running at a consistent speed compared to the natural fluctuations of your right foot.

I think the cruise control causes bad fuel miles comes from ppl who drive automatics in the mountains and their trannies don't shift down when climbing.

It makes sense that on a relatively flat road, cruise would save you gas since you are not speeding up, (see a cop) realize you are going to fast, then ease off, then accelerate again.

I get almost around 380/city and close to 470/hwy. Check tire pressure or try without using cruise control.

I've got almost 15000 on my 04 ex, I am just now starting to see consistent mileage around 400 a tank hw, 350-375 city. Take a little time to break the engine in, but believe me it gets better

i get anywhere from 25-34mpg city. I have an 02 civic ex sedan. It has 56k miles. Correct me if i am wrong but all 7th gens were not meant to do over 40 mpg it's in the freaking manual. So for u people claiming close to 40mpg (with exception of the hx), B.S. Go back and do your math and keep better track of miles and gallons pumped in your gas tank.

I have been keeping track since i bought the car, no exceptions.

Here is the proper way of determining your M.P.G.

on fill ups: assuming u used up all your gas, take down your miles driven on that tank and divide by the number of gallons pumped til full.

example: 347.3miles/12.7 gal = 27.346 m.p.g

if your civic is doing over 40mpg, u should give your secret to automotive manufacturers. Cause man, your civ will be putting hybrids out of business

some else brought this up. What is "to a tank"? is it 13 gal, 12.5 gal, 12 gal, or maybe the entrie tank 13.2 gal. catch my drift..............this thread is better answered in M.P.G.

Do you guys realize that the EX has shorter gears, so you're cruising at 72 mph at 3500 rpm. The DX/LX/HX models all have longer gears so 72 mph is about 2800 rpm. That makes a pretty big difference.

Cant believe you guys complaining about MPG. You should live in England where the petrol is more than twice the price. Count yourselves lucky guys.
