i think the mechanic has the best advice. even though the cars are factory assembled, they do have tiny variances that make them all individual. i would leave it at 0 until you can get it tuned or if you have nitrous or other forced induction, the general rule of thumb is 2 degrees retarded..
actually you retard your ignition timing when you have boost or nitrous. cam timing is totally different. I recommend you get a book from your local auto store. You will have to remove the timing belt covers to access the tensioner and stuff. Also you will need to make sure all the timing marks line up exact. It is very critical. You should be able to DIY if you have a book and take your time. Its kinda a pain in the butt. If you advance the cam gear like 2 degrees on a modded car usually you get a lil more midrange power. However, the more you advance it the less top end you will have. I would say it would be a waste to retard the cam gear unless you plan on reving the car past 8500 with a tight ratio transmission.

i heard it's just like changing the timing belt. And you should tune it on the dyno. What kind of mods does the car have to need a cam gear?? Milled head, pistons, or new camshaft?? If it's just basic boltons like intake, you won't need it.

yea i know she just wants to get it put on so she wont have to pay 80 bucks to get it on shes getting a turbo within the next month i know when i was sprayin i have mine set a -2 degree's my friend did mine but i dont know about these 92 civic's
if its a 92 you turn back the distributor. ignition timing and cam timing are 2 separate things. I have an adjustable cam gear on my car and it is set at 0 degrees. I dynoed the car and that was were it worked best in the stock rev range. without major mods its a waist of time IMO. I have a totally sick setup with a full standalone and everything, and stock setting was best. On 7thgens you cant adjust the igntion timing without emanage or stand alone etc... If you install that cam gear wrong you may bend valves and stuff. Be carefull or it may be worth spending the 80 dollars to have it done.
