/\ its a k series dude...

to the guy that wants to build the d17, it sounds to me like you dont know much about these motors, let alone any performance parts, and just motors in general... seriously you need to research this subject and read as much as you can for a couple of months. good luck to you and it would be sweet... but please learn as much as you can before you undergo such a project. even if someone else is doing the work you need to know how everything works that way you dont get screwed over, and you can up keep and maintain you car.

Well, it has been discussed before. In short let me summarize.
You need to redo the whole air system. The TB, IM, Head, valvetrain, exhaust and anything else air goes through. You need to get the engine to breathe. That seems to be an issue with the SOHC heads, which is why you don't see to many of them revving to high heaven. The DOHC heads flow much more air allowing them to do that.
A compression bump probably wouldn't hurt. You're going to need to build the whole bottom end. Honda skimped the factor of safety on internals to make the engine lighter, but as you rev it higher, the stresses on the rods and wrist pins increase exponentially.
You need a valvetrain that won't float (stiffer valve springs), probably bigger valves and a P&P job. You're going to need a cam (all you people who typed 'cams' should shoot yourselves) that will stay open long enough to get enough air to fill the cylinders at high RPMs. To go that high, VTEC is almost a must if you want something streetable. You can do it with fixed lift, but you can either make high RPM power like a race motor and have shitty idle or you can have midrange that dies off. It sounds like you want a race motor, in which case, go for the variable lift. I would also bank on needing a cooling system upgrade for both the oil and the water, and something like an EMS to run it. The stock ECU would just get pissy nonstop and you're gonna need to lose it. Don't forget to put enough fuel in (upgrade the system) or its all for nada. A lot of work, you may make 180 WHP if all comes out right.... but it would be so build I don't know how reliable it would be from a long term standpoint. It seems easier to just pick up a K20 and start where a fully build singleslammer would leave off, but if you want something different, have at it.

search the user name 'mirage' for info on this.

thanks heaps for the info, I have been doing plenty of research for the past 6 months or so on the matter on this site as well as many others honda-tech and so on... if I do end up going down the swap path the only engine i'm really interested in is the ITR DC5 Jap Spec. Actually the K20 is from which model of honda and what years?
