Ignition Problems!

Well te past few days when I started my car up and drove it, at first it would break up some and backfire or hesitate for a bit. Last night It began breaking up alot more and I heard backfiring while driving and when I would keep the car at a constant speed it felt like it would misfire and power would drop slightly for a second. when I floor the car and get on it it feels like it gets slower the rpms rise after 5k. I checked the plugs and the outer thread on the plug is black but the electrode is pure white(not brown as it should). I am going to try new plugs to see if maybe they are just gapped too wide but I also want to check the coils themselves. I know how to check the resistance on a distributor set up but not on a coil on plug. Can I just pull the coil and attach the spark tester? Where in the system would I test the resistance of the coil? and does anyone have the service mannuel to know what the specs are on them? Thanks.

well it's not the plugs. I swapped them out for new ngk's and gap them to stock and nothing different. It feels like when i floor it the power cuts on and off . The exhaust note sounds the same and sounds loud but the car is going nowhere like it's not recieving full spark to the plugs. How do you test the coils to see iff they are ok? check the resistance? If so where in the system do I check?

If I remember correctly, in school when we worked with coil on plug coils, we measured resistance at the primary and secondary connections.

I dont know what the specs would be, but that is what we did. There is probably another way, but not sure. I would say start there and see what resistance you have accross the 2 connections on the coil.

C Orndorff is an unknown quantity at this point
I had something like that when my Alternator was about to die. Pull it, and get it tested.
