Help getting a OBDII Reader thing
Hello,
Ok I know a couple of the Gearheads out there have OBDII readers. I was thinking about getting one for Christmas. Checking Out eBay, of course they have a generic one on there like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=43989
Looks like it'll get the job done.
Then they have more Professional looking ones like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=43989
And a software thing like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=43989
I've never had or used one before and wanted to get some input on them.
Should I invest the extra $100 bucks in the nicer one, what kind of advantages do you get with that?
All input/feedback/flaming is appreciated.
Thanks

Mine is the one that pugs into a PC/laptop. I bought Digimoto 3.7 at Digimoto.com for $119. I'm eventually going to mount a FULL PC in my car and incorperate this inside the car. But for now i plug it into my PC in my garage.

You have a PC in your garage ??
This guy has too much money
$119 sounds reasonable i'm going check out that site.
But If you put it into your car you won't be able to use it on other peoples cars??
I don't have a Laptop or a Palm at this point.
Do you think I should get out of the 80's and invest in a Laptop
or is it within reason to try to find a OBDII reader unit that has a hand held unit
Another thing I'm kinda thinking about is, if I get the el cheapo version,
It's not really upgradable. Aren't they going to move to an updated OBD in 2008??

nah i'm j/k that is really cool, I wish I was more computer savy, but I didn't keep up with the times after Commadore 64.
I guess if you kept like a 6foot extentsion with a OBDII 12 pin plug you would really have a mobile work station. I work on a lot of other peoples cars, more so than my Civic. So I dunno. My dad has a couple laptops, so maybe I'll just go over his house to use it, till I get my own.
