Rear drum adjuster too tight!!!

There was a recent post on adjusting the rear drum to make the brake pedal a bit firmer. Well i just did that diy and i screwed up! I adjusted it too tight and now i'm having a hard time turning the drum by hand and i guess that when i'll drive the increased friction will overheat the rear brakes. How do i loosen the adjuster screw? I tried to loosen it but it won't go. Any advice?

MOST rear drum brakes are self-adjusting and should not have to be done manually. to correct this, put the car into reverse, in an open area, and pump your brakes continuously. That should re-adjust them.

Automatic drum adjusters do not loosen if it's too tight. The drum adjuster is one-way. It ratchets tigher if there is play. In this case, there is no play, so reverse and brake will do nothing. Also, I don't understand how you adjusted them too tight. You can just back off the star wheel if it's too tight. BTW, I've noticed that people were removing the drum to do this adjustment There is a rubber plug/hole at the backing plate to allow you to adjust without removing the wheel and drum.

They SHOULD self adjust but they dont. My rear brakes would not have needed adjusting if they self adjusted.

Using the plug in the backing plate is a good idea but I like taking the rear drum off better.

To fix your problem do as follows:
1.) Look at the picture below.

Lightly pull the Clip that engages the starwheel and instead of tightening the starwheel by moving the wheel upwards, move it downwards. This will lossen the starwheel and lossen the shoes. Hope this explains it. If not I'll try explaining in another manner.
