Question Where is the odometer reading saved?

I was wondering if anyone knows where the odometer reading is saved and if anyone has changed it? (I know there has to be someone) I know this a legal issue, so PM is you don't want to answer on the forum.

I have looked throughout the gauge cluster and i don't see any sort of battery, this leads me to believe it's in the ECU....anyone know?

ooooo i know this one......its in ur guage cluster....that holds all the mileage..its not in the ecu...i changed my 04 dx cluster to a ex cluster a few months ago and the miles were set back to 000000 cause its a new cluster, but anyways its in the guage cluster...if u change it out u need to put on a sticker displaying the original miles on the car before the swap.

it dont need a battery in the cluster either its like a playstation memory card dont need a battery to hold memory! If ur planning to disable the odometer u need to find that wire that reads mph but then u cant read ur mph wen moving.

Well here is the story. The displayed cluster miles are stored in the gauge cluster. So if you swap to a new one, it will be zero miles. However, the ecu still keeps a record of the actual miles on the car. So the real mileage can always be obtained by tapping into the ecu. There are some speed shops that are actually able to "flash" the new cluster with your original miles this way.

I have heard of people that go to honda because they screw up their needles in their cluster and honda just replaces the cluster and puts a sticker with the mileage on the door. If it was possible to "flash" the cluster, wouldn't honda be doing this instead of just stickers?

Honda is lazy and cheap. It costs them money and time to send out the cluster to a shop. But it can be done. Dealers will just give you a sticker on the door frame saying mileage was reset on a certain date. That's bad to have if you ever sell the car.

Now I've taken my entire cluster apart many times. I even swapped parts from a second cluster I got off ebay to fix stuff I've broken. Is there a reason you're wanting a new one? What specifically broke on the one you have now? Or do you have a DX and you're wanting an EX cluster for the tach?

I know one Acura and one Honda Service manager very well and they both say mileage is not stored in the ecu. Then again if no one ever showed them, they would not know. I know when I hooked up the Honda tester, you do have to input the milelage and vin before you can obtain codes. If you know of a way to flash from Honda equipment, I have access to the Honda equipment. I want to add miles to my ex cluster

As far as sending it out, the places online charge more than a cluster at retail. Some seem to be a flash and other are adding their own chip in like playstation modchip.

Civryder02: Yea, i saw your post earlier when I was looking for this question. I've gotten mixed responses. All I've learned for a fact though is that the cluster stores the displayed mileage.

Luciferi: Thanks a lot for the info.

and one more thing its all in the cluster so some spedo shops are able to flash the mileage over but it will cost u around a 100 bucks to get it done......i rather put a sticker on it and say it had xxxxxxxxmiles on b4 the swap.

Mileage is stored in the cluster and in the cars ecu. The mileage will not reset to whatever the cars mileage is if the cluster is swapped. The miles will stay with the cluster.
I changed my "silver" ex cluster with a black cluster not too long ago. I like the black face much better.

After a little research today, i found out the 03 up accord, TSX, and 04 TL can be flashed through the HDS(fancy Honda computer). It was unclear where the new information comes from, it sounded like it was retained somewhere in the vehicle. No one at the dealer knows, they are still trying to figure it out themselves. Whether this will be able to work on older cars without the can and ban busses is unknown.

ebencosme has a little shameless behaviour in the past
i had a TV on my car and got stolen so when i turn the lights i smell something burning but did not know what it was (didn't mind) so took i the car to the shop got it fixed so when i got it back i turn the light on see that i don't have no ilumination so what i did was took the car to the dealer to check it out they told me some wire was doing ground on the dash but they were stupid cuz they already burned the new one they got for me and it had the same miles i had on the car so what i did i bought one on ebay but 2001 my car is 2002 i (different color) so i took everything out of the burned clusted and put it on the used like the guages even the display for the miles cuz it had another color it came out good know it matches the other lights

If mileage is stored in the ECU,

errr, I'll save my thoughts and experiences.

bottom line, it's stored in the cluster.
