Should I get rid of the resonator?
Hey, i don't know if resonator is spelled like that but i guess you all get the idea. I got a muffler put on, the guy said it'll be REALLY loud. well its not, I have a good sound, but not loud enough. Should I get the resonator taken off or will it be too annoyingly loud after that and will that be illegal or fail anything? Please let me know asap, I plan to do it tonight if I go through with it, thanks.
It depends on which muffler you use, resonator cuts alot of HP. If you use a ricey muffler then the already anger bee sound you have will be amplified. I use a flowmaster force II, sounds great wihout the resonator and still get all the HP. It is still growls.
I have a straight through muffler and it doesn't sound like "an angry bee." Its sounds really good but its just not loud enough. I have to keep my sterio turned off to really hear it. I don't have a system or anything so there's no real reason i shouldn't hear it. The only thing I can think of without spending a **** load of money is spending $40-$50 and getting that taken off. Any suggestions?

Apparently, the resonator helps generate low-end torque. With it, the car is quick of the line but run out of breath at higher rpm. Lose it and the car is slower of the line but you gain a bit of top end performance.
Best compromise is to maintain the resonator and change the air filter, drop-in type, to a freer air flow type.
The resonator also helps to cancel out the high frequency sound of the 'exhaust energy pulses' (hope I got the term right) for a quieter engine.
Deep throaty note comes from a good muffler in the back.

Well I did it. I took it out. And the final result is... I LOVE IT! It sounds really good. Not like a coffee can, not like a weed wacker. Its deep and throaty. Thanks CK for the long explanation of how it works and what the point of it is. I'm not too worried about power bc all I ever do is drive to walmart and to work in Sparks, Maryland. So if you have a 7th gen, want a LOUD exhaust, and hopefully great tone depending on the muffler/exhaust system you have, drop the resonator.
