Please help with my VAFCII

Please help with my VAFCII I just got my VAFCII installed by my friend today but I dont know how to set it or did we do anything wrong when we install it. We have connected the wires correctly and everything is ok when we start the car. Somehow, when we go out for a test drive. The VAFCII states that my VTEC is "ON" at 3000 RPM (mine is a SOHC 01 coupe) and after I set the VTEC to go on at 5500 RPM and I can feel the power at first then. After that my check engine light is on and my engine is cutting off at 4000 RPM. So I unplug the battery and reset everything back to factory setting then the engine light is off and everything back to normal. Does anyone know what is happening? Or anyone had their VAFCII installed and had the same problem. Please help, I dont want to screw up my car. Thanks.
