first gear selection in civic auto?
first gear selection in civic auto?
okie dokie, tranny question number 2
my mom's '03 accord v6 AT has P R N D D3 2 1
my dad's '97 camry has P R N D 2 L
my friend's integra GS auto has P R N D4 D3 2 1
my friend's EAGLE, has P R N D 2 L
a wide variety of cars have the ability to lock the auto transmission into 2nd AND 1st gears, but why not our civics? how come our civics dont allow a manual shift into first gear on the auto tranny?
and also, is there anyway to modify the stock AT tranny to manually shift into second gear, so instead of P R N D D3 2 on our car, we have P R N D D3 2 AND 1???

Yeah, really. There's no use for first gear unless you really want to blow your engine apart. Even in my manual, it's not like you can run first gear to any appreciable speed. If you want first, then just stick it in D2. It'll be in first while it needs to be and you won't blow apart your engine.
^^^D2 locks it in 2nd gear. Your gonna have to run through first on D or D3 then snap it back to 2 if you want to "control" your gears.
If you have a 01 or 02, you can kinda see that there looks to be space after the 2 to shift back to 1. I think you can see it good at night with the dimmer lights on. And this was covered a long time ago. I'll tell you now that we can't do anything about a 1st gear lock, unless you have tons of money, then anything is possible.

actually if you take apart the lever you'll notice there is a 1 there, but that option was only available on european models (and maybe some other countries too). they just modified the plastic around the shift lever so you can't select it. and even if you could select it, it wouldn't work with the way the transmission is built here.

You shouldnt be shifitng your auto tranny anyways. Its not a triptronic and its not a stick, so leave it in D and realize its a slow automatic.

oh my god, didnt you learn in driving school about this???
(j/k)
lower levels in automatics are there to help you drive down/up hill easily
it's Just like your bike (if you have one)
What do you do to climb a hill? you lower the gear to make it easier.
and also it's used to come down hill where if there's a miles with downhill, car will evantually accelerate and you will need to hit break alot, but if you do this, not that you are just waisting your break pad but it will heat up and it might do some damage to your suspention. so if you drive downhill with lower gear, you wont have to hit breaks.
sometimes D3 is used for faster acceleration (say you are drag racing with your AUTO (dont worry, mine's auto too.)) starting up with D3 will give more energy to start up faster, but changing D1 to D2, D2 to D3 D3 to D is useless and it will damage your car if you do this alot. (also you will waste more gas then you drive in D)
