why D3 and D have different RPM while going 40mph??
hi guys! this is my first post!
today while driving on local, i noticed that if i'm going at a constant 40mph while on D, my rpm is about 1500. but when i use D3 at same speed, i have about 2200 rpm, anyone know why?? cuz i think that all D3 do is prevent tranny from going in to 4th gear, and i don't think my car use 4th gear at 40mph... so why does D and D3 make such a difference on RPM ? btw my car is stock LX auto

Let's put it this way: On a manual, you could go say, 40mph in both third gear and fouth gear...it revs higher in the lower gear even though you can go the same mileage. On an automatic, the D3 is a lower gear. Just because you are going X amount of miles doesn't mean you are in a certain gear. For eg: 5 mph does not = 1st gear and 20mph does not = second gear
The D3, lower gear, is there on your auto for a reason...you need more power sometimes..like slopes and such.
Make sense?

i see, so probably it was in 4th gear while i'm on D, and when i shift to D3 it downshift into 3rd and i have more rpm
should have thought of that... i can't think after 2 hours of math lol

auto(4 gears).....if u're going at a constant 40mph...then its going on 4th gear..y?..4th gear is for overdrive...u'r going constant 40mph, which u don't need much torque...
