5w-20 oil - Necessary or Recommended?
#32
Grey,
Here's a little more info to chew on:
http://asia.vtec.net/topics/oil1.html
I don't know if you can buy this oil here or what makes it special but look at the viscosity. 15W-40 and 10W-30. Both are made for VTEC engines.
Another layer to the mystery...

Rep Power: 0 to break away from the Viscosity debate,
my buddy is goin to WyoTech and they told him that for engine break in it is best to run a full conventional oil because it has all the things a new engine needs(kinda like breast feeding an infant)(no seriously), then after the breakin period, use full synthetic because it is void of all the impurities that conventional oil has, thus prolonging engine life

Rep Power: 336 I dunno. . I constantly exceed the recommended maintence scheduel/parts. I always do what I can to avoid cheap parts. So I use the 0w 20 stuff that Mobile 1 puts out with the synthetic mixture. I think the engine really does run smoother, and really gives me that quietness that I enjoyed when I first got the car.
So I don't think it's necessary. . .I mean. . your car will run fine if you use any oil, but the oil life wont be as long and your engine may be taxed slighty more in the long run.
So just for my .02 I recommend using the recommended oil weight at the very least, and if you can, go ahead and exceed the recommendations. Maybe you'll feel the smoothness, maybe you wont, but I think I noticed a little bit and anytime the engine feels like it's running smoother is good by me.

Rep Power: 0 Honda and Ford both switched to 5W20 oil in 2001 to get a better fuel economy rating for their vehicles. That is the only reason they suddenly started recommending 5W20 instead of 5W30. Amsoil's website has an excellent explanation on how 5W30 is perfectly fine for vehicles that 5W20 is recommended for.

Rep Power: 0 Thanks a lot, I'm interested to see their statement on 5w30. Personally, I've used 5w20 Amsoil Synthetic since after the break-in, but I have been eyeballing the 5w30. This thread helped a bunch, thanks!
