Question turbo timer problem

I installed my HKS Turbo Timer Type-1 yesterday and I got everything working fine, except the RPM feature. The timer is not reading the rpm correctly. I checked the wire connection, and I tried to use the learn feature to adjust the rpm on the timer to match my stock tach. The numbers it reads are too high, and they fluctuate too much.

Has anyone else encountered a similar problem?

Is our rpm signal a 5V digital signal or a 12V analog signal?

Our "rpm signal" is the blue/grey wire, position 7 in the ECU.... right?

The wire is just blue, position 7. I didn't even bother hooking up my timer to the RPM because it's pointless. As a safety issue, I just hooked up the parking brake so the car shuts down if anybody tries to drive it while it's running. I let the voltage determine my countdown time anyway. But I have the GReddy Profec E01 tapped in, and the RPMs are right on the dot. If I had the service manual I'd be able to help you on the voltage, but I let the shop doing the turbo borrow it. As far as it being too high and fluctuating, I think I know why. Our RPM signal is a pulsing signal... if the timer is set to understand a lower pulse (internal), it will show a higher RPM from a faster pulse. If it's just reading voltage from the wire... it will just read the random number you set it to learn, higher voltage = higher RPM, and numbers will fluctuate between pulsing... in theory.

Thanks Smokie... that makes sense. I tried to use the learn feature of the turbo timer, but it still didn't work. The learn is supposed to help the timer to adapt to the pulse of the signal. I guess I won't be able to use the cool rpm and shift light features on the timer. But like I said, everything else works fine.

When I get my car back, I'll hook up the RPM signal just to make sure. But I definately do know that if it thinks the pulse is lower, than RPMs will read higher. I'll let you know though.

I just got off the phone with someone from HKS... they told me to find out what type of signal the wire is sending. He said most of the rpm related wires are analog 12V, but the only 5V digital is originating from the ECU.

So now I just have to find out whether or not that wire is 5V digital or 12V analog.

I think I may have the solution... is it possible that I should be using connector E, #26-blu-Engine speed pulse? I will try this today... maybe its the 5V digital for the rpm.

Actually... I think you are totally right. That's it for the RPM signal. I knew it was the Blue wire... but I couldn't remember where. It's kinda hard... I don't have any of my manuals for any of my products, or my car to look it all up. I gave the shop everything I had. But I'm almost 100% sure that it is the Engine Speed Pulse in connector E.
