its a mechanism that "pushes" your brake pedal back to the normal position, kinda like hydrolics......

If you didnt have a brake booster you wouldnt be able to stop your car. A brake booster multiples the force that you apply when you press the brake pedal to stop the car. Just think, would 100lbs of force be able to stop a 2800lb car?

The brake booster works off of engine vacuum, when you press the brake pedal it uses engine vacuum to help apply more power to the brakes. Before power brakes, cars didnt have brake boosters...

Yes, flotsamm is right. Our cars are equipped with the most common of boosters, vacuum boosters. There are other types of boosters on the market, ie: hydraulic boosters, but they are normally for larger vehicle applications because they can output more force (and a seperate vacuum pump would be required for diesels, which many large vehicles are diesels).

Vacuum boosters work on the idea of pressure differentials, check out this link if you're interested...

Yeah. . you'll notice the absense of the booster if you are rolling down a hill and you shut off your car and apply the brake. . You have to push down twice as hard to stop half as good. .
