05 HCH will not shift to park

I have a 05 HCH and it will not shift to park and I cannot get the keys out. Anyone ever had an experience like this or any suggestions?

Re: 05 HCH will not shift to park

Most common issue I see is a corroded and binding pivot where the shift cable connects to the lever on the transmission.

By the time someone complains about the problem and I get to see the cars, the shift lever is very stiff to move from P to D, and you usually can't pull the lever past the D position.

I have remedied several by taking the connection apart and cleaning everything up with wire brush (sometimes a wire wheel in a drill) and maybe sandpaper until the corrosion is gone and it fits and the pivot moves freely again, then applying a liberal amount of grease to keep it from corroding again.
More grease or protectant may need reapplied every couple years.
Low/no cost fix, but it takes a little work.

I suppose someone could actually damage the cable if they force it too much, at that point cable replacement may be necessary.

If it's not that, you may need to take the console apart to inspect the shifter and its mechanisms.
