Defrost/Heat/Ac Fan
Defrost/Heat/Ac Fan
When I turn my '04 civic on in the morning the blower comes on fine. After some time it just shuts off and I can't get it back on. A couple of times while driving it just came on again although not blowing with the force you would expect. If I shut the car off and try to turn the blower on again it does not work. If the car sits for an hour or so then most times it will come on again. Anyone know what it could be? What could I check myself without having to go to a repair shop?

check the transistor for the blower motor, it may be failing. its somewhere behind the glove box where the blower is.

Re: Defrost/Heat/Ac Fan
With power off I would remove and reconnect (reseat) the connector at the transistor unit. Or with ignition and fan switch on try gently moving the connector to see if the fan trys to work when doing so.
The transistor would most likely be a dealer item.

Thanks. So in your diagram 7 blinks would indicate an open in the air mix control motor circuit?
If I get 12 blinks would that be a good indication that it would be the transistor? If so, would I go to the dealer to get the part? Are there other cheaper avenues?

Yes

A bad transistor is one possibility but not the only one. Pull the code and post it. I'll then post the appropriate troubleshooting diagram.

Re: Defrost/Heat/Ac Fan
Do you have an Ohm meter ??
If so perform the continuity check on it that is shown in other threads. Something opens up on these (possibly a thermal cut off TCO. type of fuse) It may have opened.

Re: Defrost/Heat/Ac Fan
the transistor is very easy to see. just open the glove box down like youre changing the cabin filters, and its on the left side with a plug going to it. see if you can take the plug out and make sure the metal contacts are not burnt. and if they are, clean with alcohol and grease it back up with dielectric lube. or you may just need a new transistor.
Re: Defrost/Heat/Ac Fan
Best to test rather than to guess. The diagram below shows how to test the transistor, but it's wise to follow the troubleshooting guide to ensure that the bad component is identified.

Re: Defrost/Heat/Ac Fan
There is something on the transistor unit that opens... The best I can tell is someone had mentioned a 114 degree C. TCO. That would certainly be cheaper than the complete unit & a simple fix.
It is a pretty common issue on the 7th gens. Someone mentioned there cabin filter was plugged tight...That could certainly cause the TCO to open as the transistor relies on air flow for cooling.
