Timing Belt $695 plus tax at dealer
Timing Belt $695 plus tax at dealer
Hi everyone,
It's been about 5 years and I am going to dealer for a Timing Belt change and Water pump, and so on. I have an 03, and only have 15,000, yup you read that right. I live close to school and work... when people see that; they think I have an 05 model...
** Do you think $695 plus tax is reasonable?
I know I can save a few hundred by going to a smaller shop, but I want to have it done at the dealer b/c it is a big job, and plus if anything goes wrong, I can complain to the corporate office (hahaha).
What ya all think?
Thanks....

Why are you doing a timing belt with 15K on the car? Its a 90K change... To my knowledge there is no time limit on the belt unless there is visible damage.
I dont think the dealer puts you in any better position to complain when they screw it up.

very true boilermaker, but doesn't time also cause the belt to go bad?
I mean it will take me another several years before I get anywhere near 100K miles, and I am concerned that the it might break and cause alot of damage, had that happen on an older civic of mine.
I was going off the 5yr or 100k miles rule, whicheve comes first.

Its a 90K change. Do the math out, 90K on the 12K a year average is 7.5 years. Its a new car, not a marvel of 80's engineering. Timing belts arent the disaster they used to be.

2: $695 in SoCal is a rip. $600 is the max I'd pay period at the dealer IF they are replacing the tensioner and H2O pump. $500 at an indy shop depending on what they are replacing.
3: boilermaker and others are right - its a 90K replacement. However, SoCal heat takes its toll and can cause rubber to degrade depending on if your car is outside on 100 degree summer days with smog, etc working at it.
I'd change it next year. If you really want peace of mind, pay an indy shop to do a valve clearance adjustment (Which you still don't need at 15K) or something and look at the belt while the VC is off. that's $90 or less.
Re: Timing Belt $695 plus tax at dealer
i got mine change a 106000km. I live in canada which is extremly cold. It kills the timming belt, i dont want to risk it.
And i got everything done (timing belt, water pump, cam seal, crank seal, valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals, pcv valve adjust value, coolant) for $470 including labour. All OEM parts.
If i did it in stealership, it will be appox $1000CAD.
Things up here are more expensive then the States, so look arround before u fork up big bucks. I bet u can find a better deal

I just did mine. I paid $162 for belt, tensioner, and waterpump. I paid $400 to have it all installed.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your input, much appreciation!
Some factors that make me want to go ahead and do it are:
1.) Yes, I do keep my car outside 24/7 in all types of weather,
2.) I have a tendency to drive my car pretty hard. (I know some of you are laughing, but it's all good)
3.) Having a timing belt break in the past makes me very caustious and wary.
4.) I do not trust myself enough to "do it myself"...
I know many of you will think it is a major $$$ rip off (I totally agree), but I would rather have peace of mind, then to constantly wonder when or if it will break.
Thanks again everyone...
