Strange acceleration noise
Strange acceleration noise
vehicle: 2001 honda civic lx, automatic.
everytime the AC is turned on I begin to get a higher pitched engine acceleration noise after five or ten minutes of driving. It's like a whirring noise.
I thought this problem was isolated to the AC so I didn't use it for a while. Then I noticed that the problem shows up without the AC on, but not very often, twice since I detected the problem in early June.
Another thing. A couple of days ago I decided to turn on the AC and immediately I noticed a ticking/rattling sound coming from behind the dash. It was real subtle and could only be heard when the vehicle was idling. I had never noticed a sound like that before, so it is probably not normal.
Any ideas what it may be? I plan on taking it to the dealer and have them take a look at it, but I would like to get an idea of what it could possibly be so I won't get taken for a very expensive ride.
Thanks for any input.

Hey willy2001 I just came across your post. I'm having the same issue with my 2002 lx (30k miles). It was a very faint sound..my friend described it as a sowing machine. It only occured when I pressed down the gas slightly usually between 800 rpm and about 2.3-2.5.
If i get into the gas it goes away above 2.5. I never heard it when I put the engine in neutral and gassed it. Untill last night when I heard it very very slightly in neutral. Id say it occurs on about 90% of the time when I get the car moviing and when its going along as well.
I saw you posted 2 months ago...did you get it fixed? was it the belts? which ones? Im gonna try putting med grade gas and synthetic oil to see if it helps.
thanks
