speed odometer not working

speed odometer not working
my speed odometer isnt showing proper miles per hour when the car is running. i called the honda dealer and they said the sensor might be bad and its on top of transmission. is this correct? or it may be the meter its self. if it is the meter i would have to take it in, because the dash would have to come apart. how about the sensor on top of trans how hard is that? any help welcome. thank you. kato1
