Oil for Trans Fluid?

I have a buddy that works at a shop and he said that he uses 10w-30 motor oil in his manual trans. Has does this sound right. I mean it would be a good lubricant, but it just seems odd to use motor oil in your trans. Thanks for any help.

Re: Oil for Trans Fluid?

its a touchy subject. i actually heard of some manuals (such as hanes etc) tell people to use 10w30 oil. my buddy used 10w30 in his tranny when he had a trans leak and couldnt afford to buy tons of honda MTF. it worked fine.

Re: Oil for Trans Fluid?

I've heard of people using conventional motor oil in their tranny. However, imo, if it wasn't designed for it, don't use it.

Honda MTF is not expensive by no means. I currently run Amsoil MTF in my car. Runs a lot smoother than Honda MTF. I've done tranny fluid changes with both Honda MTF, and Amsoil MTF. Amsoil wins hands down. However, using Honda MTF would be fine.

So either way would be fine. I'll prolly use the MTF, but I appreciate the responses.
