Rep Power: 0 DIY oil change is more expensive?
Hello,
I live in Richmond Hill, ON, Canada and have a 2001 Civic LX with 144,000 Km. I bought this car as a new Car in Dec 2000 and have been going to go to Honda dealership for all services for last 7 years
I need type D service according to Factory recomanded maintainance in Canada
Type D
Replace engine oil* and filter.
Service front and rear brakes.
Rotate tires**, inspect for wear and adjust pressure.
Lubricate all hinges, locks, and latches with multipurpose grease.
Inspect tie rod ends, steering gear box and boots.
Inspect suspension components.
Inspect driveshaft boots.
Inspect and adjust drive belts.
Replace dust and pollen filter.
Replace air cleaner element
This is my first time I am trying to do oil change, air filter change and pollen filters change by myself.
I went to a Honda dealership and bought the following stuff.
1 Oil Filter (15400-PLM-A02) = $8.68
1 Drain Bolt (90009-PH1-000) = $8.04 (How come a bolt is so expensive?)
1 Drain Washwer (94109-14000) = $1.83
1 Air Cleaner Element/Filter (17220-PLC-000) = $19.40
2 Air Conditioning Filters/dust and pollen filter (80292-S5D-A01) = $36.78 ( $18.39 each)
4 Honda 5W20 Oils (CA67006) = $39.92 ($9.98 per 1L bottle)
The total is 114.65 + tax $14.90 = $129.55
Now I am wondering I should have just brought my car and have done the type D service at the dealership?
The Oil Filter and Oils cost more than $49 + tax but in the dealership oil chnage is $39 + tax.
Why is DIY oil change more expensive then dealership oil change?
Thank you.

my guess is that it's because you stuck to genuine Honda parts. Car manufacturers tend to sell parts to the consumer for a ridiculously marked up price. 10 bucks per oil bottle? dude, Royal Purple is cheaper than that, and that's expensive oil as it is. I guess if you go through the dealer to also do the labor, the parts are cheaper, but when selling it directly to the consumer, they rip you off massively. I once had to pay close to 100 bucks just to replace the antenna on my Mustang...and that's only parts, no labor involved!
seems like most people that change their own oil use Mobil 1 and such.

I would definitely get the dealership to do the oil change for you, if you are going to spend that much on oil and filter. Its already costing you more for just the oil and filter. Why pay more to do your own oil change.
If you want to do the oil change yourself. Buy any generic brand oil, quaker state, castrol, valvoline, etc.. its your choice. Buy the oem oil filter, and washer. Do the oil chang yourself that way. Don't buy the honda oil imo.

you have extended warranty? it's already 2008 and you bought your car 2000. i think if you do it at the dealer or at jiffy lube or something, it's usually $30+ and buying your own oil, filter, and sometimes the air filter runs you close to that (if you don't use synthetic). i just finished with my oil change at home and only ran me $18 ( castrol oil and oil filter). If you know how to check for all the fluids and oils, check tires, and all that stuff, you can do them at home. And it's so gratifying that you changed oil by yourself!

Keep in mind he is in canada but the cureency exchange is pretty much the same, although things up there seem to cost more for whatever reason.
I use castrol and a bosh filter. I replaced the drain bolt several oil changes ago and replace the washer every other oil change. Filters at automotive stores are just as good if they sell bosch or KnN, whatever you wanna use. I'd only use OEM honda fluid for my transmission and maybe powersteering. Yeah, you did get ripped off a bit. Go to an Auto zone or Napa, or equivilent type shop that sells fluids, small parts, lubes, filters, small accessories, wiper blades, stuff like that and it should be a lot cheaper.

These are US prices, you can convert them....
A gallon jug of Castrol GTX is ~$12
A decent filter is $6
A drain bolt is max $.40 from the dealer
To my knowledge the air filter is a 10-15K change and the pollen filters are 20-30K.
Just change the oil.
Honda filters are just blue fram ones, and the oil is just oil. There's nothing special.

One other thing you can try is to buy in bulk. I still buy the genuine Honda oil filter from the dealer, but if I buy 3 of them at a time the parts guy will take a dollar or two off of each one. I can't see any reason why you would need to replace the drain plug unless you haven't been changing the crush washer each time. For the pollen filters and air filters, I'd just buy those from a generic parts store. If you buy a K&N air filter you won't have to worry about buying an air filter again. Just get the cleaning kit and clean it when it gets dirty.

OK, i m in CANADA.
$10 for a S2000 oil filer and a crush washer. $24 for 4.4L Castrol GTX . We only need 3L.
So total is 34$ and you have 1.4L oil left for next oil change.
The dealership here charge me 48$ for oil change, so i save 14$
price are all in canadian and tax include.
