ive been using mobil 1 5w-30 for quite some time now. im thinking about going with either of the following 5w-20, 0w-20, or 0w-30. which of the few would suit me best for california summertime weather?

as of performance, gas mileage, and effectiveness to the engine. pros and cons of each?

u shouldve used 5w20 from the start, you can use that 5w30 but honda recommends going back to 5w20 after u used the 5w30

eh. I've been using 0w20 mobil1 synthetic for a while ... seems ok. on the bottle, it says "recommended for ford and honda 0w20 and 5w20" ... so I thought it would be ok to use it.

unfortunately, from what I've heard (and seen), mobil has discontinued their 0w20 synthetic ...

you should really just use the 5w20 honda recommends. if you use 5w30, you are making your oil pump work harder.

i was thinking about 0w-20, but couldnt find it neither for mobil 1. 5w-20 is rare to find. but would 5w-30 be exceptional for hard driving and heated weather?

which of the 2 would i see better performance/gas mileage?

i use 0w-30 amsoil full synthetic 35,000 mile oil....i've done some fuel economy tests and i've gotten 39 mpg on the first and 40.2 on the second...it helps A LOT

I put one quart of 5W30 in with two and a half quarts of 5W20, since I didn't have enough 5W20 this past oil change. First time I've ever did this. Had a bit of 5W30 left over from the Toyota Yaris. Anyway, the result on my 02 Civic 151,000 miles, MT, is a MPG of 33 to 35 from 39 to 41 when I'm using straight up 5W20. Oh well.

YOU just did the one thing you are not supposed to do... and that is mix viscosities. My mechanic and the book says DO NOT DO THIS.... Honda recommends 5-20, but that is only due to the environmentalist wackos pressuring companies to get better fuel mileage. 5-30 is actually better for your motor

i use 5w30, it will shear down a bit anyway, and the mileage seems to have stayed the same. i like better engine protection.

If the car calls for 0w20 or 5w20 then you should not exceed the 20
because of the tight tolorences of todays engines 30 may be to thick to penitrate between parts
when the engine in running full temp and the parts have expanded.

My toyota engine is a vvti engine and it is not wise for me to use thicker than recommended viscosities. The operation of the solenoids require this specification. I am not sure , honestly, if the 1.8L in our 2010 Civic being a vtec engine? requires a certain viscosity of oll as well. Comments?

What ive gathered from this conversation is that you should not use 5w30 even though there are some people that say it's better, that we should listen to what honda says

Just use what’s on the oil filler cap. There are some rare occasions where it may be beneficial to use thicker oil, but it’s safe to just use what’s recommended.
