official crash bar weight equals...dun da da dun da da daaahhh
13.5 POUNDS!
now keep in mind this is a bathroom scale and idk how accuarate it is, BUT i did weigh it multiple times, (13.5 every time), AND keep in mind there was some styrofoam taped to it i didn't feel like taking off

my car recently just lost 44 lbs by changing from a 43lbs wheel tire combo to a 32lbs wheel tire combo. That was a difference i can feel. sprung weight loss FTW!
Re: Free Performance: A weight loss plan for her
I gutted teh inteior in my rx7, it was so damn liud and ratteled so much, as soo as i hit the highway, I turned around and put the **** back in, made a difference if feel, but the stereo wasnt loud enough to drwon otu the exhaust lol. As for power steering, Im not sure how civic sare designed, but, I blocke doff the holes on my rx7, and the only way it sucked was if I was not moving and tried ot turn, but, it gave me much more response, and it was actualyl more comforitable to drive/drift. But, an rx7 in nohin liek a civic so this may all be useless info lol.
Re: Free Performance: A weight loss plan for her
Im blessed
lol. Nah, im still dwelling on the crash bar idea, I know its a shady area to step into. I dont know if you are familiar with drag cars, but some of them have the holes in the back bumpers to reduce drag. Well I may do the same thing with the crash bars. I will drill out sections (one to start, weigh it, and go from there), so the rigidity will be there, just not all of the weight. I know my buddy got some JDM bumper beams for his subie, that only weigh 7lbs a piece compared to 30ish stock, I dont think this is available for our cars though. They may come out, they may not, I have to think it over since its a bit of an issue, more so than removing the AC system

wow i didn't believe people actually did this to their bumpers til i found this flyer. haha. never seen it in real life

Wow, Dec of last year and no weight measurements.
This has to be one of the most useless ****ing threads ever posted on this site.
And for the record, I have no ps in my civic and it's wonderful, I love it. A bit of a bitch when parking, etc, but for hwy driving, once you get used to it, it's so much nicer and more responsive, especially at 120+, in fact, I wouldn't be able to handle the car at those speeds with ps, way too dangerous with all of the torque.

if you strip everything in the rear (except for speakers)
you will shave off 108 lbs (+/- 2lbs)
i completely stripped my rear n i weighted everything...n thats wt it came out to be.

Re: Free Performance: A weight loss plan for her
wow. thats seems like a lot of weight. but the spare seems to be the only thing of substantial weight back there? plastic doesnt weeigh much, and that floor no way weighs more than 10lbs with carpet.

Re: Free Performance: A weight loss plan for her
spare tire was aprox 30 lbs. so even still, thats aprox 80lbs of crap... it all adds up.
and i dont care how "useless" people say, it makes a bid difference if ur civic is a DD... 108lbs is a big difference for a 130hp car...

Re: Free Performance: A weight loss plan for her
I had everything out of mine for ***** and giggles last summer. Front door panels, all of rear trim, seats, and seat belts, trunk is gutted and I haven't had PS since the car was pretty much new. (my last vehicle didn't have PS so I am can't STAND having it. I'm all over the road!) I must say there was a VERY SLIGHT difference in performance but mostly in the way the car responded on corners. ie: less body roll. I did in fact take it to the scale at the scrapyard before and after and it was less than a 100 pound difference. NOT WORTH DRIVING AROUND A GUTTED ECONO CAR LOOKING LIKE A RICER. PERIOD.
Re: Free Performance: A weight loss plan for her
ya I cleared my trunk and I definately noticed a difference, but ya the weight difference is more noticed in cornering/handling
(I have shocks/springs/camber kit/strut bars and lower tie bar/19mm rear sway) "strut bars" = 1 under the hood and 1 in the back of my trunk
I'd say the best option for 7thgens is to clear the trunk, get light weight rims w/good tires, and also what about some racing seats??
I heard some1 said earlier in this thread that the front seats are pretty heavy, so getting lightweight "street" seats for the passenger and driver would help a bunch right? Seats will also help keep you planted in the seat better than stock seats around fast corners hehe..

Re: Free Performance: A weight loss plan for her
Hmmm. Well, I'm not one to come down on anyone for trying an idea that crawls into their head, but I don't know how much difference a couple hundred pounds of sprung weight is really going to make.
Don't pull your PS. The car is a real bitch to drive without it and can be fairly dangerous. Mine was gone for about 4 weeks and I hated it - and I'm not a small dude. AC, yeah I can see that, I ditched mine for fitment reasons.
IDK. I like all my panels, 12" subs, carpeting and everything else. If you're not being paid to track the car, or only running it on the track, there's really no reason, IMO, to gut the interior.
Have fun with it, by all means, but I think you're going to quickly get tired of a noisy, ugly interior that doesn't allow passengers.

I rarely carry a passenger and I still think it's pointless. Just my opinion, to each their own.....
(for the record, I also average about 40,000 miles a year mostly non-hwy.)

Re: Free Performance: A weight loss plan for her
it makes a difference. but you can reduce weight without going all out and taking off everything. the spare tire is a big one, its heavy and not really needed (never used it once in 75k miles of driving). you can stick it in for road trips, but around town there is no point when you can just call the tow truck. plastic pieces prolly arent worth it, they are very light and wont matter much. the trunk cardboard and carpet is heavy too, but again thats something you gotta decide for yourself whether you want a functional place to put stuff or not. rear seats are heavy, but then the car gets alot noisier...same with the interior carpets. instead of doing alot of little things that may add up and make the car look stupid, do a few big things instead. keep the washer fluid level low, a gallon weighs almost 10 lbs. keep the gas low, difference between full and empty tank is 80lbs. dont use floormats, dont keep junk in the car, get a lighter battery and intake, keep the stock exhaust, dont add lip kits, run lighter and smaller wheels, and lighter lug nuts. it will add up faster and alot of those are very practical. the best platform to start with is the DX cause you dont have tons of weight from all the moonroof hardware, power windows, abs, ac, all that good stuff. already starts you off way ahead.
