All the 01 - 05 civics use the same overhaul kit. Its just the 04 and 05 SLXA trans has some changes to make it more reliable and shift better. You have the BMXA trans

cool, honda's auto tranny uses helical gears instead of planetary gear set.

except on reverse

This is why when you go fast in reverse it makes some gear noise.

Good info. I think they're a little off on that labor rate though. Around here independent shops are charging $85 per hour, and I think dealers are around $100.

Rebuilding the transmission was not all that hard, I just had to take my time and pay attention to what I was doing. You will at least need the OEM HONDA SERVICE MANUAL and to make/buy a couple tools like a mainshaft holder and a tool to hold the clutch pack when you measure the thickness w/ a dial indicator. I used a floor jack with a 2x4 to lower the sub frame. I used a jack stand to support the engine and a floor jack to support and then lower the trans. I held the front of the car as high off the ground as jack stands would let me. If you have good mechanical skills and understand how these things work I would say go for it. Also if I was rebuilding the trans that came with the car it would have had about a week of down time (since I work 40 hrs/wk), you have to ask yourself if this is ok.

Dial Indicator $28.29
Filter + Cooler $87.78
Overhaul kit $217.25
6 QTS Honda ATF $60.00
$393.32
not so bad for a complete rebuild and upgrade if you ask me.
Dopes, what do you mean by mainshaft holder? Can you show a pic of it, or link?

Also, is this the type of manual you used?

The mainshaft holder is just a adjustable bracket to hold the mainshaft when you are tightening/loosening the nut at the top of the shaft that holds the gears+clutches in place.

That is the maunal I used and thats a VERY good deal.

Re: Auto Transmission Rebuild (pics)

Hi everyone sorry to beat on a dead horse but like everyone else am having tranny issues there not has bad yet but its bound to get worst has time goes by, from what I've being reading its definitely one off the clutch packs i've yet to determine which it is , i think it might be second gear going into third gear it tends to delay to shift seconds into third gear just yesterday i had the tranny fuild change my mechanic and i both looked at the drain plug it didn't look the bad it didn't have metal shavings or gunk in it, i figure changing the tranny fuild would help but nah to my disadvantage it did nothing, i got the car for a good deal sort speak so i thought, but now that i being reading tru the forums and how i've found out the trannies suck on this cars am kicking myself over the head i've always being a stick guy this is thee exact same reason why i've always kept away from auto tranny you always here nothing but horrible stories like this, i not ones had a problem with a manual tranny nock on wood , maybe its just being my luck but, i don't anyways i took the car over to some tranny guru and he quote me $1800 canadian he said he would also trow in the passenger side engine mount at no extra cost , i just recently replace the front one with my dad it cost me a twelve pack off Coronas and 40 bucks for the oem mount,i bought the car from client off mine i paid $4000 for car , 500 bucks in taxes and 10 bucks for the plate transfer 20 bucks for the car package 70 bucks for the safety cert and 40 for the (e)test and 20 bucks for the dealer plate to do all the driving around, reading and researching tru the forums i found this thread, in it sort off motivated me to get the car fix i think this a project my dad and i get tackle, although am some what having second thoughts perhaps i should look around get maybe second and third quotes from over people, with me either providing the kit and without just to see which is better, i've looked into the tci website and it turns out they have a distributor here and canada there call performance improvements i phone them up just a couple minutes ago and they quote me for kit number
2001-02 Honda Civic Racing Overhaul Kit 558700
$156 canadian plus taxes,
there second kit is,
2001-02 Honda Civic Master Racing Overhaul Kit 559100
and i got quote on this one $358 plus taxes
whats sort off confusing is that second kit is describe much like the first kit but its obviously its more money and i personally don't see the differences tru there descriptions but maybe someone in here could chime in and tell what the differences is, the guy over at performance improvements said the i should goo with there second kit, so should i buy the kit myself and tackle the job myself, or should i just take up the butt and paid $1800 bucks to have work done by a professional? am mechanically inclined but the only problem i have is that i don't always have time to be spending in this sort projects some advise would be greatly appreciated, buying the kit is $ 358 plus 14% =$408.12 labour nothing....
versus $1800 for everything parts and labour included the passenger side engine mount as well, and i think the guy said 1 year or 30k warranty, on labour and parts...

Sorry guys for the long Post.....

Re: Auto Transmission Rebuild (pics)

Well sorry to say but TCI doesnt make the 01-05 overhaul kit anymore... Just replace the 3rd clutch and buy a new OEM filter from honda (they have a revised one that is bigger then even the one I used)

Check this out compared to the one on the first page.

Re: Auto Transmission Rebuild (pics)

Well according to my sources they still doo i mean i could be wrong but the guy whoo i spoke too said he could get the kit for sure, thanks for replying back i didnt think anybody would reply to an old thread but i guess i was wrong thanks much, am sure theres a away otherwise the trannny guy who i spoke too would off never offer me a rebuild, unless he was gonna give me a use one from another Vehicle, but then again he clearly stated a kit he didn't say from where he would get it from but i know for sure he said he would get a kit to rebuild the tranny.

as far as I know yes.. You can buy the same Red Eagle clutches and Kolene steeles from Alto USA. They are the company that actually makes the clutches. I just diddnt want to put the effort into finding a distributer for them.

Re: Auto Transmission Rebuild (pics)

I dont think they have a kit. You would have to buy all the parts seperate try bringing up their catalog. It would probably be listed under a 2 shaft 4 speed trans. The code on the trans is SLXA or BMXA so If you see parts for those.

Re: Auto Transmission Rebuild (pics)

Well that really sucks then i really wouldn't know which conponents to order , it be nice if they had a kit as oppose to having one pick all separate parts, i guess a'l just have too surrender to the mechanic, and take the bullet for the 1800 bucks either this or a'l trade the car in for something else while is still not as bad..

Re: Auto Transmission Rebuild (pics)

what do you mean it doesn't come with that, how do you figure, here is the description off the kits components.

( TCI-559100 ) - 2001-02 Honda Civic Master Racing Overhaul Kit - Our Racing Overhaul Kits contain the housing & cover gaskets, filter, o-rings, checkballs, gear shaft locknuts, lock washers, sealing washers & metal clad seals. The Master Racing Overhaul kits also include Alto Red Eagle® high-performance clutches and Kolene® treated steels for all clutch packs.

this is apparantly the exact same kit with the same part number as the tci kit which as you already know is discontinue.

I know, holy resurrected thread, Batman. I can host if you want, dopes. I can even film, actually. Have some pro cameras, etc.

Let me know - PM is cool. I'm gonna have to hold off on that EX head, though. I'm tempted to go get a junk 5spd tranny and film a teardown for future DIY use on replacing an Input Shaft Bearing. Trannies are scary, but they look so COOL when you open them up. To me, an engine looks fine, but a trans embodies what "mechanical" should look like, almost like an escher drawing or something.

Ahh, enough waxing philosophic. If you still need a vid hosted let me know.
