+1 for HG CVT 1 Fluid (08200-9006) fixing start clutch judder.

TLDR: Only Honda Genuine CVT Fluid 1 comes with the proper additive package for older Honda CVTs with starting clutches. Multispec fluids from other manufacturers claiming HMMF compatibility do not. The more honest producers will list "HMMF (not recommended for Honda CVTs with starting clutch)" e.g. Aisin.

Any transmission troubleshooting needs to begin with one or two drain and refills with HG CVTF1 first.

I finally got around to calling the dealer and discovered that they have this fluid on hand for a price of barely a dollar a quart than any of the deals I saw online).

I bought this 05 HCH with only 106k miles when my last car started having the kind of natural issues that show up at 230k miles. I didn't feel anything overly wrong when I test drove it and bought it on the spot. A couple months later I noticed the judder when taking off at a stop. I didn't notice it at first because I'm easy on the gas pedal and the clutch judder sounds exactly the same as driving on a rough road or a highway rumble strip. I couple weeks ago, I did two drain and fill cycles using Valvoline CVT fluid claiming HMMF spec. The whine mostly went away and judder eased up a little. But still, anything other than a light push to the gas pedal at a stop light was a simulation of driving a badly slipping automatic on its last legs.

Anyway, I stopped by the dealer to pick up eight quarts and did one change. Drove the vehicle like normal and the judder went away almost completely. I'm not going to be flooring off the lights though. As bad as doing a clutch on a manual is, this one looks even less fun.

I'll try to post an update on a couple weeks if anything changes, but I have a good feeling about it. Knowing what I know about car repair and CVTs, there's a very good reason those transmissions have a proper drain plug in a convenient location. And that is to easily change the CVT oil at the same time you do engine oil. If you're in a shop, just take the socket off your ratchet and move the drain cart a couple feet. Or every other engine oil change, which is like what Honda eventually updated their guidance to, along with the switch away from Z1 ATF.

My guess is that Honda deliberately left the HMMF spec loose to "help" multivehicle fluid manufacturers. Or there are multiple versions of the HMMF and HCF2 specs similar to USB3 where devices, chargers, and cables can claim support without every phone charger and cable having to support 120W PD and 40gbps data speeds just to be called USB.

More likely than not, a generic fluid running with the friction additive package that works right with the Honda start clutches will be out of spec with just about everything else.
