Re: DIY: Change the color of your door panels with suede!!

Dex- You dont have to remove the handle.

The OEM fabric is thick enough that two layers of microsuede is still thinner then the OEM stuff. Just rip the OEM stuff out, and use a razor blade to tuck the fabric under neath and spot glue it once inside the handle. booyah.

Re: DIY: Change the color of your door panels with suede!!

I started my suede project last night. Havent tried door panels yet but i did my passenger side a-pillar and am going to do drivers side today. Then next week do b and c pillars. Hopefully i'll be pickin up an rsx leather interior and puttin that in too and by then my interior will be so sweet. O and i gotta repaint my accents. Rite now they're krylon fusion silver metallic and im painting them ssm. Its gonna be sick.

Whatever you want man, fabric doesnt really matter as long as you can get it to stick, which shouldnt be too hard.

Re: DIY: Change the color of your door panels with suede!!

It's not suede, it's a fake material called microsuede. Joanne's wouldn't have real suede, you'd have to buy the whole hide for that. When you go to Joanne's (if they speak English), ask for something close to microsuede or sable suede. But anything will work, I've seen Louis Vuitton patterns and a whole bunch of cool fabrics used. Use whatever you want.

Re: DIY: Change the color of your door panels with suede!!

3m Super 77 (walmart multi-purpose has a purple cap)

cost me about 12 bucks though.. **** my life

its really nice cause its not like superglue where you press it once and its super hold. its a tacky hold which is awesome for this.

take the fabric outside or something and lay it on some cardboard. Spray the fabric as you see fit. more spray more hold, more spray more chance of bleed through. apply.

nice thing is its tacky which means you can lay it, relay it.. relay it and it will still have the same hold. and you tuck the fabric into the groove in the plastic so the adhesive doesn't have to be real strong. just has to last!

Re: DIY: Change the color of your door panels with suede!!

so i woke up the other morning and wanted red suede door panels, i went and bought fabric before i even came across this thread, figured id do some research before i started to rip my interior apart and found this.

this was extremely simple all you need is the patients of laying it down slow so you can have 0 wrinkles, i am extremly pleased with how mine turned out, i'd say 10x better than i expected

i am doing a type r look on my arm rest, black suede with red stitching on the edges of it, ill post picks of it later, hopefully that turns out as good as this did

Re: DIY: Change the color of your door panels with suede!!

Sweet bro, I just join here the other day after buying a 97. Everyone has thier own ways of doing things and i by no means am a expert so this is just some small advise. Take a old spoon you dont want anymore and a hammer, flatten out the spoon so that the round concave end is now flat. Make sure you dont have any burrs from going apeshit happy with the hammer and you now have a nice upholstery tucking tool. This helps get all the materal down inside those groves as well as you can roll the spoon too. Works alot better than a screw driver if you want to take the time to make one.

Re: DIY: Change the color of your door panels with suede!!

that sounds like it would work great, kinda wish i had more door panels to do it was a very fun DIY, i'd say for everyone that does this mod after reading this page to use the spoon idea, if you use a flat head screwdriver you can pull your fabric off the adhesive really easily creating a wrinkle, i'd imagine useing the spoon it would have much more surface area making it not pull as hard in 1 certain spot, and yes roll the tip of the spoon in a 90 degree type way so you can push the fabric under the little plastic lip, that would make your door mmmmiiiiiinnnnttt

Re: DIY: Change the color of your door panels with suede!!

Fixing to redo the headliner and sunvisors on mine i dont know if there was ever a DIY done on this if not i might make one. The spoon works well for alot of different apps including tucking headliner material. Many years and i do mean many i worked in a car stereo shop where i was the only one brave enough to install the leather kits and this was what they taught me to use back then. You will mess up some headliner or even leather material with a screw driver.

That will work too you just have to make sure it does not have the teeth on it. The onlt draw back to a butter knife is your not able to roll the edge as much but none the less i never thought of one of those, That will work

Re: DIY: Change the color of your door panels with suede!!

I have a silver 2002 Honda Civic DX. Im getting ready to attempt to re-do my door pannels tomorrow. I have purchased 3M Adhesive Remover to make sure the door pannel is clean and free of any residue. I also bought a can of 3M Headliner Spray Adhesive. I purchased 2 yrds of fabric, (wanted to make sure i had enough in case i screwed up LOL). I will be taking before, during, and after pics. And yes im posting them. Total cost of project, so far, $20.00. This is with buying materials from wal mart. Wish me luck...
