you have a d17a1 (non-vtec)
04-05 have egr and use a different primary o2 sensor (a more expensive air/fuel sensor)
if you buy an 01-03 engine you will have to swap the intake manifold and water housing from your engine to the new engine, and put your exhaust manifold on the new engine.

for piece of mind you should change the timing belt, water pump, tensionor + headgasket, plus associated seals and gaskets. use oem parts you do not want these to fail.

a used engine will be around $200-$500. anything can be done diy, it all depends you, what tools you have, and your abilities. if you know anyone that has done this type of work, bribe them with beer and food to help you.

the current engine probably failed due to burning oil, lack of oil changes/maintenance, so it's probably going to need even more work, but you could keep the parts to use as spares.

buying a used engine is a gamble, but buying from a reputable source that offers a warranty will hopefully mean the engine is decent
