new Civic owner

Not a NEW Civic, just a new owner. I just bought a 99 EX two door for my 16 y/o daughter to replace the old Camry that finally bought the farm last week. I'm joining mainly to learn what I need to know to keep the car fit, and to learn the particulars of Hondas, since this is the first one I've ever owned. I come from Mazda performance, and do all my own wrenching on all our cars and truck, so I'm familiar with an engine bay. My playtoy is a 2000 Miata that makes 210whp (supercharged).

Hey there!

Welcome to the forums!

Nothing ever really goes wrong with a Honda. So being a Honda mechanic is like being a Maytag repairman.

Hope you have a good time here though.

Welcome!

Nice Miata.
A customer of mine had a 90 with a SC.

Welcome!

There are some (1 or 2) Miata people on here. Never driven one but have heard they are very fun to drive.

Yes, yes they can be.
Driven a hundred if I've driven one. (10 years as a Mazda dealer tech 88-97)
Parking lot rally driving is fun, but they understeered without help.
Those cars withstood abuse pretty well at the time.

Drove a fake Miata (Fordzda) with a stock turbo recently and was somewhat impressed.

A 5.0 really wakes up a light car like that. **HUGE BFSEG** (Monster Motorsports)
Aluminum heads and T-Burd Posi rear help too.

Re: new Civic owner

haha, the understeer you found out was the alignment used for most folks that run autoX (they are pretty good at that, BTW). They put large front sway bar, no rear and 0.5 degrees bias toward the rear, mostly, which make usually understeer, but good traction on the rear for corner exit in tight corners.
track is better with even to higher neg camber in front, actually on miatas (I own two, a 2001 and a 95 ), sl33pyriceboy have another too

what username do you go on miatanet? mine is the same :P

Re: new Civic owner

My alignment is set up for street and track, more camber in the rear than the front. I've got an FM2 suspension, the car is pretty neutral, but I can get all the oversteer I want with the gas pedal.

I've been driving the Civic the last few days, to make sure nothing's gonna fall off or go boom before I give it to my daughter. It's a smooth as a sewing machine, first indications are that I got a pretty good deal. I haven't figured my gas mileage yet, but I think it'll be over 30 mpg just around town.
