Hi, have a question on exhaust
I was hoping someone could give advice.. I'm looking for a muffler for my 97 civic hatchback. I've looked at the Pacesetter exhasut system thats around $220. But I think I'm just going to get a muffler. I probably won't get an ebay one because I doubt it'll sound nice. I want more of a bark and rumble, rather than a raspy whine.
I dont want a cat-back.. too raspy from what Ive heard but I could be wrong.
I want to spend 100 dollars give or take, basically most bang for buck. With most any muffler, will I notice a gain in power? or will there even be a gain in power? i dont really care just looking to spice up driving. Definetly don't want to lose power.
If someone could list a few good brands that are suitable for just a muffler and dont sound so generically wangangangangang-like, I would really appreciate it
And yes I am a supreme noob, to a degree, no father arond for that stuff, thanks a bunch.

Re: Hi, have a question on exhaust
You won't gain any power, you might actually loose a bit of power if you switch to a larger exhaust since you factory pipes are optimized to have ideal back pressure. As for brands, you won't be able to afford anything other than an ebay exhaust for $100.
Sometimes you see decent quality exhausts for $2-300 used, but for a new brand name exhaust you'd be looking at $500 plus.

Im not really into the whole look and sound of ebay mufflers anyway. the Folger look.
Here's a link to the system I mentioned above. Any words of advice like their reputation or if you think its a good idea.

Re: Hi, have a question on exhaust
Not much better than an ebay exhaust, if you go that route spray it with a ton of rust resistant paint otherwise it will rust out. The suto Ferrari logo they use speaks to their quality IMO.
If you're serious about a nice sounding exhaust on a budget look in various forums for sale threads, you shouldn't have trouble finding a good quality exhaust if you take your time and look around. Unless you put mirrors under your car, you'll never actually see it anyway so its not a big deal to buy used. Just don't get a used Cat if you keep yours.

I'm thinking about getting the Yonaka catback system, it looks like a good deal. they sound really nice. not that i have alot of samples but i get the idea of what sound like. Can I keep my catalytic converter on? or since its a catback i will have to change it/ might as well change it.. thanks.

Re: Hi, have a question on exhaust
thanks mindbomber
It should be on sometime after xmas, try to get some soundchecks on it for other people.
I'm gonna try a cold air intake again. the first time I bought a universal and I couldnt figure out how to take off the plastic above my TB, and theres another plastic box near the hose end on my stock intake, and i wasnt sure how to put it together. the directions where really long and said I might have to customize the fitting with some piping and thats way out of my league.
any tips on cold-air ins for 97 hatch? Im sure people have em I just want to find one with easier installation. My intake looks like that, and the hose keeps going to the left there and two little holes come out of the hose and fit into the lower plastic box. I was hoping I can maybe remove that lower box cause the directions for universal air intakes say nothing about it.
But in the end it doesnt matter too much because I can always go to a garage if i really wanted. And im gonna have this kick *** Yonaka on there. OH man.

Re: Hi, have a question on exhaust
Normally intakes are car and engine specific, a universal intake is a bit odd.
Just search Ebay and buy the cheapest short ram intake you can find thats made for your car, then order a good air filter to fit that intake. Throw away the garbage filter that comes with your Ebay intake, replace it with the new air filter and installation should be fairly simple.
