Glad I found this site!
I am really glad this community is here. So far everyone has been very helpful and there is a lot of great knowledge here.
A little about me: I'm not exactly a car mechanic by any means. I can usually figure out a problem but if it requires much serious work on the car, that's what my father in law Ric is there for. He's got a lift in his garage and he builds old hot rods from the ground up. He knows everything about cars. Watching him helps me learn a little bit.
I used to be an american cars only guy. I had a 1988 Dodge Daytona Pacifica. It was fully loaded, leather seats, power EVERYTHING. But in a year and a half of owning it I blew out the electrical system twice, rack and pinion replaced, much more went wrong, and finally blew a head gasket. I put almost $5000 into that car in 18 months.
I met my wife in 1998 and she had a 1996 Honda Civic HX. I hated it at first. Stupid little rice burner that it was... After a couple years of NEVER having to fix anything and seeing that the car had 120k miles on it I was like wait a minute... I just sold that car two weeks ago. It had 212k miles on it and for repairs, we put in less than $700 in almost 8 years (not counting maintenance, we did the timing belt twice). I knew that I would be buying Honda Civics from then on.
I had to part with it because the mileage was high and my wife bought a Scion XB so we though it would make more sense for me to inherit her 2001 Ford Escort ZX2. I hated that american piece of crap. Ugly. No power. And we paid a sports car premium on insurance for it?! My HX would've smoked that car twice over yet the insurance doesn't call the civic a sports car.
My hunt for a new civic ended last week. I just got myself a 2001 Civic EX coupe. I am in heaven once again. This car rocks and I'm looking forward to 8 more years with it. =)
I'm planning to get some wheels for it, a body kit, and some seat covers. Man, 2001 civic had ugly seat designs! The dealer is installing a spoiler for me as part of the deal. =)
So that's my life story.
