Bulb output decreases the more hours of use they have. Go online and order phillips extreme power bulbs, you'll be very happy with them.

Stick with what MB is telling you. Don't go for the Sylvania ones. I bought those POS bulbs and they blew out in 3 months. Thankfully I had my old ones stored in the box.

In addition, check to see how cloudy/hazy your headlights are. If they're cloudy, light is going to have a hard time getting through them. Polish them with a kit like the Meguiars Headlight Restoration Kit, then seal them with a good wax like Meguiars NXT Tech Wax 2.0 (you'll have to wax them regularly to protect them, or they'll haze up again).
And any high quality, clear, +50 or +80 bulb should be good, but remember that brighter bulbs don't last as long. I like my Phillips VisionPlus (+50), but the Phillips X-Treme Power (+80) that MindBomber recommended is your best bet if you want the brightest you can buy. (And remember not to get any dirt or oil on the bulb when you're installing it)

Re: stock headlight bulbs are garbage
many factors can cause poor headlight performance. i remember on my 2002 i had the philips xp bulbs and it was almost as bright as my hids now. they are very decent for halogen reflectors. make sure they are aimed right and the bulbs are receiving 14v when the car is on. lower voltage can cause massive light loss. also if the housings are not crystal clear or if the headlight beam is aimed too low or too high.
