DRL problem
DRL problem
So my DRL light has been on for months, i never gave it much attention because i just turn my headlights on when i drive during the day. Went to get my car inspected and they would not pass it because of the DRL not working properly. The garage suggested i buy the DRL module from HONDA for $155.00. After looking into it a little i find there is also a 10amp fuse for the DRL and possibly a relay, im just wondering if anyone had to fix this problem before and what was the easiest and cheapest way to solve it.
Thanks for anyone willing to offer some advice.

Re: DRL problem
Usually the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) on the DRL module has a bad cold solder joint or one of the etched lines on the board is fried or broken.
Take the unit out and remove it from the case. If this is the situation you will be able to see most likely as it tends to look a bit burnt or dark etc at the bad joint or on the bad area of the PCB tracing.
Repair with a decent quality solder and it will probably be OK.
So far have never had to replace one as this seems to be the problem most all the time.
You can also get one from a wreckers as a back up just incase you don't feel confident doing the soldering.
DRL module is usually in behind dash area a bit to the right on drivers side of the civics.
Check to be sure your fuse etc. is OK also.
Take the money you save the stealership.... uh!!err!! I mean dealership lifting off you and get something nice for your mum on Sunday.

Thanks alot, i kind of figured there would be a common problem with them by now.
Your deffinitly right about the stealerships, if it was up to me i wouldnt even bother fixing the DRL but in Nova Scotia if your car comes with day time running lights they must be operating to be inspected.
I will be ripping that bad boy out today and giving it a good look over, i dont know why they just didnt use a relay, the module must have resistors that cut down the voltage so your DRL lights are dimmer and use less power. i thought about just running a relay from the igniton so when i start my car they would come on but cut and chopping the harness isnt always a good idea.
Thanks for your help i really appreciate the fast and very helpful response
Cheers

Re: DRL problem
After some investigating and taking a few dash pieces apart i found a blown 10 amp fuse that is associated to the DRL, after i replaced it i had a relay under the passenger side dash buzzing like crazy when the drl lights try to come on. so i took it out and luckily i work at a nissan forklift dealer and one of our relays fit right in, but even after changing it it still buzzed. so after putting up this post i was given some excellent advice so i took out the module, hauled the board out and sure enough some of the cold joints had fractures. re sauderd the joints put it back in and it works. Good way to save yourself $155.00 .
When i brought the car back to get the rejection sticker off the guy said oh did you buy one? i said no i fixed the one i had
