Hazard fuse keeps blowing, in spells

Hi guys,

Any insight on this:

Hazard fuse keeps blowing. Service engineer looks at wiring and cannot actually locate fault but fuse then stops blowing. I get car back and it works fine for days/weeks/months and then the fuse starts blowing again.

Things to consider:
  • This first started when I accidentally shorted the right hand indicator bulb holder while replacing a failed bulb.
  • Recently it had been working for a month, but yesterday I hit a large pot-hole and it started blowing fuse the same day. Not sure how soon after the pot-hole.
  • Why should the hazard fuse be involved, if I'm not using the hazard switch?
  • If it's a wire shorting to earth that gets inadvertently moved away from earth when then engineer starts looking, which one would it be?
I wait in hope.

Re: Hazard fuse keeps blowing, in spells

the turn signal bulb sockets are the problem. if you push the bulb down too far in there, it can short out the connection and blow fuses. the turn signals are connected to the hazards. when you go over bumps, i bet the bulb moved and shorted out. try to push it down fully, then pull it out a tiny bit so it is not touching the bottom. you may need to get new sockets too if it doesnt work.

Thanks Gearbox,

You're definitely on the right track, and it fits with the symptoms. I've detached the bulb holder completely now and replaced the hazard and indicator fuses. Now the indicators behave just as if one indicator bulb is blown (i.e. as it should) - but no fuses blow, which is the main thing.

Of course, the bulb holder is behaving perfectly now it's on the workbench. One problem being the difficulty of testing the bulb holder for a short with the bulb in as the bulb has such a low resistance (7 Ohms) which my Ohmmeter cannot measure accurately.

Anyway, tomorrow I'll get a new bulb holder. I'll repost with the results.

Re: Hazard fuse keeps blowing, in spells

Just quick update: Two weeks now and fault has not recurred. Although the old bulb holder tests OK on bench, it was where the spark occurred when I accidentally shorted circuit out, so I guess its insulation has been compromised. Thanks for the diagnosis, if only I had come here before the garage,
