What HID bulb type do I need?
What HID bulb type do I need?
I have these halo projectors and i want to install an HID kit. So my question is how do i know what bulb type and stuff, and how do i make sure my hibeam and lobeam work properly? I plan on getting one thats less than 75. Any recommendations would be nice. If you need a pic of the lights and stuff please let me know.

Re: What HID bulb type do I need?
save up and get a retrofit done? I'm kinda pissed that I waited so long to get one because the light output is FAR better than what it was when I had my regular halogen projectors with an H1 HID kit.
However, I've been using a DDM tuning slim HID kit since april, and I've been nothing but pleased with it. I'm gonna go ahead and assume your halo projectors are h1 bulbs, so you'd need an H1 kit. Oh, with an H1 kit, you'll need to take a dremel to the projector housing so the HID bulb will fit. Just a bit of forewarning.

the first picture I have in that thread is a comparison of an H1 HID kit and an HID retrofit.

I bought a retrofit off of a member that got rid of his car. It involves a bit of creativity. If you decide to do the same thing I did (go with a kit for now, then retro later), you can go with an H1 kit, and get the morimoto mini HID projectors from theretrofitsource.com and retro them bishes into your headlights. They take H1 HID bulbs, so you wouldn't have to buy anything new to go with that swap. Just remembered about that

it says H! above it, but i have a question there are 4 holes but we only have 3 lights. what do i do? Also which light goes where?

as you can see there is one hole on the left, one in the middle, two on the right

Re: What HID bulb type do I need?
reflector (inside one) is your high beam, the middle is the projector for your low beam, and I'm gonna assume your parking light is the inner hole in the outer reflector, and the turn signal is the outer hole in the outer reflector
You're still gonna have to take a dremel to the projector bulb opening to fit an HID bulb, and I'd recommend only getting HIDs for your low beams. Most people only flick their high beams to signal other drivers and you'll wanna have your HIDs come on for at least a minute or so before you turn 'em off

Re: What HID bulb type do I need?
I was think about getting these ddm kits for my 02 si:
Do I need to connect/setup a relay for these ddm kits to the battery and where is the best place to mount them? Now Im not too sure if I want to get them after seeing riceboys pics. I like the Plug and play advantage of the ddm kits.
Is there any other benefits/advantages besides the Halo/Angel eyes on the retro fits?
Sorry for being an hid noob.

you need a relay harness anytime you use HID's. the ballasts pull way more amps during startup than stock lights do. overtime, this stresses the stock wires and can cause a fire.

Re: What HID bulb type do I need?
HID ballasts typically have a higher starting current draw than your OEM halogen bulbs. With that said, hooking an HID ballast up to your OEM harness could result in popping the headlight fuse. The relay allows the HID ballasts to get their 12V power source directly from the battery by way of the relay (which would use your headlight harness as the switching mechanism, allowing current to flow like this: battery->fuse->relay->HID ballasts). I've had some problems in the past when I connected directly to the headlight harness, even with my low starting current drawing digital ballasts. As soon as I installed the relay harness, my problems went away.
If you want, I can explain how a relay works. I was bored earlier and started making an animated gif of how a relay works, too.. but it's a long and tedious process, and I can only do so much for so long.. lol.

Re: What HID bulb type do I need?
the hole the bulb physically goes into. The HID bulb is a little bit fatter than a halogen H1 bulb, and some bulbs have a ceramic base on the bulb adds about 2-4 mm to the overall diameter that needs to fit in the projector.
Just looked at a set of DDM H1 bulbs I have and the ceramic base is recessed into the plastic base.

comparing the 2 bulbs, it looks like it should fit, but putting the bulb into the projector housing is a completely different story. If/when you get your HID kit/projectors and wanna put 'em in, expect to make a day project of it, it'd prolly make it a bit easier to pull the headlights apart and remove the projector to modify the housings. Just take the bulb, see how well it fits into the projector and modify as necessary.. You just gotta kinda play around with it for a while for it to fit right..

Re: What HID bulb type do I need?
also on the ddm website, they have an optional hid harness. do i need to buy that too?
i thought it comes with bulbs and ballasts, the harness they sell for 10$ more is the same as the relay harness right? i should just be buying the set for 40 plus shipping

also is there anyway to test the halo's before installing them? the person i bought em from wants me to test if the led halos work fine, could use a quick reply for this one

Re: What HID bulb type do I need?
8 AA batteries will give you adequate voltage to test angel eyes. thats how I tested mine..
Re: What HID bulb type do I need?
alright so i got the HIDs fitting in there now next problem the halos. I wired em up using a tap thing by 3m, and i did it into the parking light with 2 wires, which one is positive and which is negative, i tried both combos but neither worked (i tried batterys again to make sure it wasnt fried) the light is lighting up but the halo isnt.
Here is what i think it is,
I am using a 16 guage wire from the tap thing by 3m in the parking light to the wire for the halo so i can connect more easily rather than removing the tap. I am thinking the tap isnt really tapping and that there is no current going from the taps. I am getting a multimeter to test them but if anyone can post any useful information.
Also just to make sure red goes to red and black goes to white...correct?

Re: What HID bulb type do I need?
You said you tested the halos before, right? LEDs will only light up with current flowing in one way, so if it doesn't light up one way, just switch the wiring.. As for working with white and red wiring, I can't be too sure which would be the positive.. The only way to know for sure is testing them. Common sense says that red would be the positive wire, but you can never be too sure. My TYC headlight harness has the colors reversed (colored wires are negative, black are positive).. On the parking lights, black is most definitely negative, and red w/ yellow stripe is the positive.
