01 Civic Headlight problems

My headlights won't turn on, but the highbeams work. It's not the bulbs, i checked the fuses and it's not them either. I asked a dude at auto zone last night and he said to check the relays, so i did and replaced them and my headlights worked fine all last night. Now they don't work!!! What else can it be!?!?

Thanks for the help guys

You may have a bad light switch.

do you mean the actual switch that i turn to turn the headlights on? i don't think it's that because as soon as i replaced the relays last night they worked fine until today.

Re: 01 Civic Headlight problems

there is a recall for the lighting switch due to a wire that overheats and causes lo beam not to work. most 01 and some 02 civics had the problem. relays should not be going bad in one night and it may be related to the recall problem.

Re: 01 Civic Headlight problems

also if you want the recall pdf, send me an email berberoglu@yahoo.com it tells you which wire needs to be replaced and how to do it. but any dealer must do it for free.

Re: 01 Civic Headlight problems

I would run the vin with the dealer 1st to see if it has been done already. If not and you mess with it they may not honor it.
Since it is a recall it would be a safety issue.

If they won't do the work then it should a somewhat simple fix once you locate which pin is involved.

Re: 01 Civic Headlight problems

My headlight switch works fine on low beam, but 90% of the time, the high beams won't work on either temporary mode or click mode. Since the car is now 10 years old, would this still be covered under a recall? And was there an official recall that I can cite if I call the dealer?

Re: 01 Civic Headlight problems

^^^ The recall is for missing low beams only.

Do the low beams actually go off when switching to high beams ??

Yes, when switching to high beams, there are no lights at all. Whether I click forward or momentarily pull the switch back, there are no lights at all.

My 1st thoughts are bad headlight switch...but...?

On the 01-03 the ground path for either the high or low beam filament is provided through the headlight switch. It could be a few different causes though.

If you could get the covers off you might try gently moving the wiring and connector going into the headlight switch and see if the high beams try to work (headlights on and on high beam)

Re: 01 Civic Headlight problems

What I have determined is if I rapidly move the lever back and forth, the switch will work properly a few times and then return to its former state. Is this normal wear or is it covered by a recall?

Re: 01 Civic Headlight problems

No recall for this issue,

http://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine...5-S5A-A02.html

$30 gamble but it sounds like a defective switch.

Both high & low beam share a common ground coming out of the switch, If you do not have a bad connection at the harness... then you could take the gamble on the switch.

Once the covers are off 2 screws hold the switch in and 1 connector, very simple replacement (once the column covers are off that is)

Re: 01 Civic Headlight problems

Took it apart easily enough. All the connections tested good with the ohms and diode meter. Repeatedly exercised the plug-in and reassembled. It worked, but not 100%. So, I took it apart again, cleaned the contacts and slightly closed the gap in the points and now it seems to be 100%. Back in use again.
