HID Noobie - Need some help

Hi guys, I checked out the sticky and stuff and read up on as much as I could, but I couldnt really find anything that would answer all my questions.

1) I have a 2002 Civic Si (Cdn model). As it stands right now I have the stock headlights (H4) bulb.

I want to buy some HID's but I don't want to lose my highbeams (from what I understand the H4 bulb hi/low beams are the same). I've heard that all those dual beamed HID bulbs are pretty much crap and not worth getting.

I was also told that the "daytime running lights" would need to be disabled or it would mess up the HID ballasts? Is this true ?

So what I did was I bought some OEM foglights and was planning on just taking the fuse for the daytime running lights out, and installing the dual beam HID kit ...

But now my plans are changing ...

2) Now, I am now thinking of getting some TYC projectors. If I switch to the projectors would it be an H1 bulb? From what I understand in the TYC projectors the highbeam is a totally different bulb - So there would be no loss of hi beam, and I could just buy an HID kit and have the low beam HID. Whenever I'd need hi beam (if ever) it'd still be available.

Also the daytime running light is seperate from the H1 low beam bulb (the one with the HID) so there would also be no reason to disable the daytime running light fuse.

Am I correct on my assessment so far ?

Only reason why I am thinking of going with the TYC, is the fact that
a) the dual beam HID bulb costs about $100 USD more, yet from what I heard they are shitty
b) the projectors are about the same price as the dual beam bulb (extra $100 USD) but also give off a more sick look to the HID, in comparison to a HID kit in a normal light housing.

3) What is the difference between a HID conversion kit and a HID retrofit ?

From what I've been reading people on this site have been dissing the HID conversion kit saying that they don't last long etc ...

They've been saying that a retrofit is better ... however, I cannot find much info on where to buy a retrofit kit.

4) Price, as my pockets are not that deep - I can't really afford to buy something that is going to be unreliable and break on me every six months. Last thing I want is for something to go wrong and not know if it is the bulb or wiring or ballast ... in the middle of January.

Are these HID conversion kits reliable ?

to answer you last question first, no. if you want to spend your money on the best product you would want to buy is OE stuff. philips 85122 d2s bulbs, some sort of d2s projectors, and oem ballasts. this is what you would call a retrofit.

afaik, there is only one place where you can buy a "retrofit kit" and that's from www.hidplanet.com . if you need more information about retrofitting, you should've searched the lighting forum for "retrofit." or you could click on the link in my signature for a somewhat "step by step" of how to retrofit your tyc headlights with valeo projectors.
