honda civic 2003 lxi sedan 4 doors.
i replaced my old engine (d15y2) with (d17a) but i'm not getting more power . i've just replaced the engine without replace any other part like. is it the reason? i think the vtec is not working. what can i do to get actual performance ?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: d15y2 vs d17a
I didn't see a D15Y2 in the Wikipedia entry, but the D15Y3 lists about the same horsepower as the D17.

D16 maybe?
ECU - computer control of the engine. Each engine has a specific ECU.
Really, statistically the 2 engines are pretty much the same.

the ecu could be affecting.
weird, can't really find anything in D15Y2 - U sure it is not the Y1 or Y3?

1-i didn't change the ecu so is there will be a problems in the future?
2-the vtec is not working now if i changed the ecu the vtec will start working the question is how much vtec will increase the performance?
3-how can i find the ecu for the D17A and if i find one how can i make sure that the ecu for the D17A not for D17A1 or D17A2 OR ....etc.

Re: d15y2 vs d17a
I'm in the USA, the D17A is not a North American engine so we would have to rely on someone who imports JDM engines and parts. I'd suggest you find one of those people or companies and inquire about the correct ECM/PCM that will match the engine you have now, if you wish to go that route.
I'd also wonder if you could convert the D17A to operate as a D17A2 (if that computer is easily available) by adding the pressure switch on the VTEC solenoid valve, along with figuring what other differences there may be and convert or adapt over to the A2 version.

Re: d15y2 vs d17a
If the car has an immobilizer, a (US spec) PCM would have to be programmed before it will allow the engine to run.
IDK what is available in other countries

Re: d15y2 vs d17a
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immobiliser
When equipped, there is an RFID transponder chip embedded in the head of the key, a receiver and control unit to read that key, and the PCM must receive an 'OK' signal from that unit before it allows the engine to run. And a flashing green key symbol (indicator light) would appear in the gauge cluster.
I can't really answer that.
Does the engine run correctly?
The D17 engines are not all that powerful to begin with, they are not favored for high performance.
Were your expectations too high?

so what you think the best solution for mt problem?

it works correctly as the original one. no problems.
and No I do not expect that huge performance. but I just did not feel the difference when I changed the engine from 1.5L to 1.7L vtec.

Re: d15y2 vs d17a
Try a computer for the D17A since you have that engine.
Unsure about the wire harness.
Did your D15xx engine have some version of VTEC on it? If so, wiring may be similar?
Might only need 1-3 additional wires if the original was not equipped with VTEC.

the old one was D15y2 i dont know if there was a vtec version of it or not i even cant find information for this engine on the internet.
is the D17A computer compatible with D17A2 wire harness?
thanks alot for helping me i apprentiat that.

Re: d15y2 vs d17a
Googled D15Y2 (appears to be non-VTEC), the engine is found mostly in the Middle East:
http://79.134.3.14:8080/manual/CivHtml/2-26.htm
http://79.134.3.14:8080/manual/CivHtml/2-27.htm
http://79.134.3.14:8080/manual/CivHtml/2-28.htm
Looks like you can play with the numbers in the URL to get an entire service manual.
I would think so but I have no wiring diagrams for D17A .
Which engine harness is being used right now?
The VTEC on the D17A probably only needs a single wire to operate the solenoid. (If it were me I'd just run a new wire--less work IMO, but I like wiring).
The VTEC valve on a D17A2 would need 3 wires: 1 for the solenoid and 2 for the pressure switch on the VTEC valve.

Simple and cheap for sure.
I gathered a list from the service manuals I just found and listed them here: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...ml#post4707698

Re: d15y2 vs d17a
i am running a d17a with a d17a2 computer...
you are going to need to:
1. get ecu (DO YOUR RESEARCH AND GET THE ONE THATS RIGHT FOR YOU!)
I have an automatic civic 04 LX with the d17a engine
So i bought this one from eBay a while ago
04 05 HONDA CIVIC 1.7L EX AT ENGINE CONTROL MODULE 37820-PLR-A72
2. get a pressure switch with the connection that plugs into the pressure switch (the d17a doesn't have a pressure switch, instead it is plugged and you need to replace that with a pressure switch)
3. you need to pin the ecu with two wires. Run the two wires through the firewall (one for the vtec and the other for the pressure switch)
4. take the vehicle to dealer, tell them you want to reflash the ecu, replace your old ecu with new (at the dealership before they flash)
they will charge you AROUND $100 if remember correctly..
