Question Strange Noise When I Steer Hard Right (98 Civic)

Hi all, recently I noticed a strange noise when I turn hard right. Only right and not every time.

Sounds like a pebble rolling around in the boot. (Pretty sure it's back left) I've checked the boot and there's nothing there.

Also checked the following....

Exhaust rubber clips.
Wheels (checked nothing was loose and nothing stuck).

I'm not very mechanically minded, but can follow instructions, so any help would be brill. Thanks

1.6 Vtec 98' Civic

Mike

When you checked the wheel did you pull towards you ( as if you were taking the tire off the studs) to see if there was movement? Is the sound coming from the front or rear? Sounds like it could be wheel bearing or bad yolk which is internal of the axel boot. Look for black grease around the wheel well and boot. May take time to tear a hole in the boot if internal.

Re: Strange Noise When I Steer Hard Right (98 Civic)

Thanks for the reply;

Sounds like the noise is coming from rear passenger side.

I can't jack the car atm because of 60mph winds but tried to 'wiggle' the nuts and nothing moved. (I know it needs to be up really.)

I couldn't see any grease but will look again.

If it were a wheel bearing that's a simple fix, yes?

Is it something I could do with a small jack and a Haynes as a guide?

As for the "bad yolk". Is that really bad?

Cheers

A back yolk means the linkage in side the boot is coming loose and the components will not turn. As for wheel bearing, you will need to remove the whole hub and take to a NAPA or another shop that has a press so they can take out the old and press the new. I recommend Timken wheel bearings if you need to replace them. Definitely shop around before purchasing online and local. Coupon it up because these will run you around 80-140 dollars for just one then the cost of a press shop. Good luck!

Rhonda1: OP is in the UK so......Boot = Trunk

OP: Lift up the carpet in the rear, check the spare tire area and under the spare.

Does it sound like it's inside the cabin? Inside the boot? Outside the car?

You might need a second person to hunt for the noise while you drive around and make it happen, that's what we usually have to do at the shop.

I've found kids toys stuck in the roof before, kids stuff small things in the sunroof slot while it's open.

Re: Strange Noise When I Steer Hard Right (98 Civic)

Thanks for the replies,

Yes, I am in the UK (where the only coupons we get are for half price melons, lol). The noise sounds like it's coming from the boot (trunk), so I took out everything I could find with the exception of the spare/jack because they are firmly affixed to the chasis with bolts.

If we say every right turn is 90 degrees then the noise starts when I'm about 45/50 and continues until I'm straight again. It really does sound like something is rolling around the back of the car, but there is nothing there at all.

Had a quick look and couldn't see any grease or anything else in the arch.

There is a bit of wood in my boot (more cardboard really) that sits under the carpet - but this is definitely not moving. If it were something rolling around then surely it would do this on a left turn too - I mean, can't always roll to the right.

The main concern I have is something is going to snap and the cars going to go boom... lol

Cheers

(Edit... I'll check the roof - I did have it open before this all started but no kids to insert stuff, lol)
