i have been reading conflicting info, and have been told conflicting info about when to change my timing belt....my question is simple....how often should it be changed?....everybody gives me a different answer....

it is an 05 civic 1.7

i changed it at 105,000 kilometers which i now think was too early because apparently it is not recommended until 168,000 kilometers or so i have been told....but when should the second change be done?

should the second belt last as long as the first one?

i was just at a honda dealership picking up a few small things and i asked the service advisor.....he said the first change should be done at 168,000 kilometers, and after that every 100,000 kilometers....

this does not make any sense to me, why wouldnt the second belt last as long as the first one?

i asked him that question and he said "i have no idea why, maybe because as parts wear they become harder to turn, so it puts more stress on the belt"

i have 215,000 kilometers on it now, so i have gone 110,000 kilometers since the change....going by the first recommended interval my belt should last another 50,000 kilometers, should it not?

Just go to a mechanic you trust, not the dealership, ask them to inspect the condition of the belt and ask them when to change it.

It should be done every 168k km or 7 years.

^yea 168k km or 7 years.

I changed mine at 140k km and it was still in very good condition, not even a single crack. I changed it anyways cause my car was nearly 8 years old and the climate here fluctuates from +30C in the summer and -30C in the winter which can't be good for belts.

I was really hoping to just leave it till next spring, winter is starting here, I shouldn't put more than 10,000 kilometers on it till then, so I'm hoping that will be okay, and from what you guys are saying it should be, this guy at honda had me a bit worried though with what he said,
