So a few days ago the engine noise on my 2002 Civic suddenly became much louder than usual. It sounded like it was coming from the rear of the vehicle, so assuming it was something to do with the exhaust I crawled under the car today and found this:
I bought my car from NY state, so there's some rust underneath, but apparently the muffler pipe is especially rusted for some reason. It just fell off
I've never had this happen before and as I'm a student I'm kind of strapped for cash. What are my options? (I don't assume duct tape would work?).
Thanks for your advice.

find a used muffler at a car yard, buy an aftermarket muffler or have a muffler shop cut off the rusty section and weld on a new piece that wouldn't cost much maybe 50-80 dollars.

Goddamn, I was thinking you were in Michigan or something because of that rust. That is terrible! Check your brakes and under the engine for more rust!!
I just took that whole piping assembly off today, in advance of a new catback, easy to take off. Check out majestic honda.com for new parts, or get another exhaust!

easy fix. find a stock muff and attach it back on. you dont even need to weld.
the only problem i see is getting those rusted bolts off. PB plaster is your friend.

Thanks for your replies, guys.
I may go to a junk yard and try to find a used muffler, but if I end up buying it new do you think this is the one I should get?
Thanks again.

I went ahead and just ordered the aforementioned muffler, but on Amazon as it was cheaper:
I've never done a muffler job before. I noticed that Amazon listed these as "Frequently bought together":
Gasket:
Bolt kit:
Should I buy those things, as well?

You need a new gasket and bolts.. however, they're not really specialty things. The gasket, maybe, just because of the shape, but you may be able to find that stuff at your local auto parts store (i.e. autozone or similar)
